Broncos bolster playoff hopes with win over Titans

Last Updated: Sunday, December 26, 2004 | 3:24 PM ET

The Denver Broncos improved their standing in the AFC playoff race with a 37-16 road win over the Tennessee Titans Saturday.

Jake Plummer broke out of his slump, throwing for 303 yards and two touchdowns, and Reuben Droughns scored three touchdowns for Denver (9-6).

Plummer was intercepted once, giving him an NFL-high 20 interceptions this season. But he otherwise was outstanding.

Of the four NFL teams that played on Saturday, Denver was the only one with legitimate post-season aspirations.

The Broncos had dropped three of their previous four games, including two to teams with losing records.

Heading into the game, the Titans had given up 171 points during a four-game losing streak.

Saturday's victory was Broncos coach Mike Shanahan's 100th career regular-season win with the franchise.

With the New York Jets needing just a victory in their last two games to clinch the first AFC wild card spot, the Broncos appear to be battling it out for the second and final spot with Jacksonville, Baltimore, and Buffalo, each at 8-6 going into Sunday's games.

A late-game fumble against Jacksonville early in the season could cost the Broncos a tiebreaker with the Jaguars.

Denver will finish the season hosting Indianapolis on Jan. 2.
