NFL fines trio over pre-game fight

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 16, 2004 | 10:40 PM ET

The NFL handed down $10,000 US fines Tuesday to Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter and Cleveland Browns running back William Green for Sunday's pre-game fight.

Porter and Green were both ejected after fighting during warmups prior to Sunday's 24-10 Steelers win at Cleveland.

Browns fullback Terrelle Smith was also fined $10,000 US for his part in the scuffle.

Reports claimed the combatants accused one another of spitting and later came to blows with their helmets off on the field.

Porter supposedly punched Green in the face, splitting his lip.

Coaches separated the two and both teams retreated to their respective locker rooms.

Animosity between the teams built all week because Browns defensive lineman Gerard Warren said it would be worth a fine to go after Steelers rookie quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
