Retired NHL defenceman Garth Butcher pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting a woman in Mississauga, Ont., two years ago.

Butcher, 41, entered his plea Monday before Superior Court Justice John Sproat in nearby Brampton, Ont.

The alleged assault occurred Dec. 12, 2002.

"He has maintained since his first contact with the police that he is not guilty of any sexual assault," said David Humphrey, Butcher's lawyer.

"He will defend himself quite vigorously against any of these allegations."

While a publication ban prohibits the victim from being identified, Sproat revealed the trial before a jury would likely take five days.

Butcher, from Regina, was drafted 10th overall by Vancouver in 1981 and spent 14 NHL seasons with the Canucks, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques and Toronto Maple Leafs.

He totalled 48 goals and 158 assists for 206 points with 2,302 penalty minutes in 897 NHL games.
