Warriors sign Derek Fisher

Last Updated: Friday, July 16, 2004 | 3:43 PM ET

The Golden State Warriors have agreed to terms with free-agent guard Derek Fisher.

The deal for is worth $37 million US over six years.

Fisher spent his first eight NBA seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and was a key contributor to the Lakers team that won three straight NBA titles beginning in 2000.

The move to sign Fisher was an interesting one considering Golden State's depth at the point guard position. The Warriors inked Speedy Claxton to a multi-year contract and traded for Nick Van Exel last summer.

Fisher had also given consideration to playing with Miami, Houston and Seattle as well as re-signing with the Lakers.

"We feel very fortunate to add a player and person the caliber of Derek Fisher to our team," said executive vice president of operations Chris Mullin.

"The fact that he chose the Warriors over several other attractive suitors is certainly a good feeling."

The 29-year-old Fisher averaged only 7.1 points and 2.3 assists per game last season while primarily serving as a backup to future Hall-of-Fame point guard Gary Payton.

Fisher was still able to provide a spark off the bench and hit one of the biggest shots of the season when he drained a dramatic buzzer-beating shot in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals against theSan Antonio Spurs.

The basket lifted the Lakers to victory in the critical game and they went on to win the series before eventually making it all the way to the NBA Finals, only to lose to Detroit.

Fisher has totaled 7.4 points and 3.0 assists per game in his career. His best season came in 2000-01 when he posted 11.5 points and 4.4 assists per contest.
