The Toronto Blue Jays could wait no longer for Carlos Delgado's rib-cage muscle to heal.

Delgado, 31, was placed Tuesday on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 30.

"I hope he can swing pain-free by the weekend," said Blue Jays manager Carlos Tosca, who, in several related moves, activated Frank Catalanotto, Justin Speier and Chris Woodward off the DL.

He also demoted North Vancouver rookie Simon Pond to the Syracuse SkyChiefs of the AAA International League.

"He was really struggling to make solid contact," Tosca said of Pond, who hit .163 with one home run and six runs batted in.

Delgado is averaging only .227 through 49 games but leads the Blue Jays with eight HRs and 32 RBIs.

The Puerto Rican native, who is making $ 19.7 million US this season, also has scored 26 runs.

Delgado is a lifetime .281 hitter with 312 HRs, 991 RBIs and 841 runs in 1,344 games over 12 MLB seasons, all with Toronto.

Joining Delgado on the DL is reliever Valerio De Los Santos, who injured his pitching shoulder in last Saturday's 4-0 loss at Oakland.

De Los Santos, also 31, sports a 6.81 earned-run average in 17 appearances this season.

The Dominican left-hander has struck out 10 batters and walked 10 in 11 2/3 innings.

Toronto currently has seven regulars on the DL: Delgado, De Los Santos, Kevin Cash (rib), Roy Halladay (shoulder), Orlando Hudson (hamstring), Justin Miller (hamstring) and Greg Myers (ankle).

"I've never seen this many injuries on one team," Tosca said. "Slowly and surely, we're getting some guys healthy."
