Washington Redskins defensive end Bruce Smith stands alone as the NFL's all-time sacks leader.

Smith, 40, set a new league record with his 199th sack in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 20-7 victory over the New York Giants.

The future Hall of Famer sacked Ottawa native Jesse Palmer to eclipse the 198 recorded by Reggie White over 16 NFL seasons.

"I know that I'm not second place any longer," said Smith, who has four sacks in limited minutes this season.

"When they print up the football cards, they won't say sacked second to such and such or so and so."

Five games ago, Smith was removed from the starting lineup for the first time in 17 years.

But the 11-time Pro Bowler, who is expected to retire at season's end, boasts impressive career statistics.

Smith has totalled 1,530 tackles, 199 sacks, 15 fumble recoveries, two interceptions and one touchdown in 276 games over 19 NFL seasons with the Buffalo Bills and Redskins.

The six-foot-five, 265-pound Virginia Tech product was drafted first overall by Buffalo in 1985.

"Bruce is smart," Giants defensive end Michael Strahan said. "He knows how to pass rush.

"There's an art to it. He's definitely one of the Picasso's of pass rushing."

Of note, quarterback sacks were not officially recorded by the NFL until 1982.
