The Buffalo Sabres were busy bartering Monday. First, they traded away Stu Barnes and Rob Ray. Then, Chris Gratton.

Gratton, 27, was shipped with a fourth-round draft pick to the Phoenix Coyotes for centre Daniel Briere and a third-rounder.

Gratton posted 15 goals and 29 assists for 44 points with 86 penalty minutes in 66 games for the Sabres this season.

The Brantford, Ont. native has 161 goals and 437 points with 1,219 penalty minutes in 756 games since being selected third overall in the 1993 NHL Draft.

Gratton has played for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers and Sabres during his 10-year NHL career.

A 6-foot-4, 225-pounder, he is one of the more robust centres in the game today.

The same cannot be said for Briere, however, a slight 5-10 and 178 pounds by comparison.

Briere, 25, is a slick playmaker though, with 17 goals and 46 points in 67 games for Phoenix.

Chosen 24th overall by the Coyotes in 1996, the native of Gatineau, Que., has 70 goals and 146 points with 146 penalty minutes in 257 games over six NHL seasons.
