Cherry had been negotiating with CBC for the past several weeks after his contract expired at the end of last season.

With the start of the new NHL season two weeks away, Cherry's signing of a new contract comes at the perfect time.

"We knew it was going to happen, so we weren't concerned," Joel Darling, a CBC senior executive producer, said Tuesday.

Financial details of the contract weren't made public but it is believed to be a multi-year deal with a raise in salary. Cherry was reported to have earned $700,000 on his previous contract.

While Cherry was not available for comment, he did say recently that he envisioned himself coming to terms in order to begin his 22nd season on the program.

"I can barely wait to get started, I love doing it so much," he said.

Cherry's cohort MacLean is currently negotiating with Hockey Night in Canada and is expected to ink a new deal before the season premiere on Oct.12.

According to reports, MacLean is looking for a deal worth in the neighbourhood of $600,000 per year.

"I'm supposed to meet with (CBC Sports executive director) Nancy Lee this week and I should have some news soon," said MacLean's agent Don Meehan.
