Toronto's Daniel Nestor is on the top of the world.

Nestor, 29, became the top-ranked doubles player on the planet after he and Bahamian-born Mark Knowles combined to capture the RCA Championship, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 over Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi at Indianapolis on Sunday.

"I've been eagerly awaiting this week for a while," Nestor said. "To be No.1 at whatever you do is pretty exciting.

"I've been playing for 10 or 11 years and I've been up high in the rankings before, so its taken a long time to finally get there. Its been one of my goals for a long time."

Nestor has combined with Knowles to win five tournaments so far this season, including the Australian Open.

They were finalists at the French Open and Wimbledon and, with the U.S. Open on the horizon, can become the third men's duo in half a century to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a single season.

Legendary Australians Frank Sedgman and Ken McGregor turned the trick in 1952 followed by the Indian tandem of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes in 1999.

"It would be a nice achievement, but the more important objective is to win the Slam finals when you get there," Nestor said. "We've had an unbelievable year, but to say we expected all the success would be being overconfident.

"We had some good years in the nineties, but we knew we had to improve mentally and to compete hard no matter what the situation. We've won matches this year that we probably would have lost in the past."

Nestor and Knowles currently have 1,009 points, an ATP Doubles Race record, surpassing the mark of 990 set by Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde last year.
