The Philadelphia Phillies announced Wednesday that the club has acquired outfielder/first baseman Jeremy Giambi from the Oakland Athletics for outfielder John Mabry.

Phillies general manager Ed Wade made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

Giambi is batting .274 with eight home runs and 17 runs batted in through 42 games this season.

He homered Tuesday night in a 6-4, 14-inning loss to Baltimore.

Last season, the 27-year-old Giambi hit .283 in 124 games, while collecting 12 homers and 57 RBIs.

He also finished second in 2001 among American League pinch-hitters with a .250 batting average with six runs batted in.

For his career, Giambi has a .272 batting average with 35 homers and 166 RBIs in three-plus years.

In 21 games this season, Mabry is batting .286 with no homers and three RBIs.

In a pinch-hitting role, the 31-year-old was hitting .313 with a pair of runs batted in.

Mabry is a .271 career hitter in seven-plus seasons.

The trade between the Phils and the A's is the first since 1973, when Deron Johnson went to Oakland for minor league catcher Jack Bastable.
