The Washington Redskins have made Steve Spurrier the highest-paid coach in the NFL.

The team announced Monday that it had signed the former head coach of the University of Florida to a five-year contract worth $25-million US.

"Steve Spurrier will bring a supercharged, exciting and dynamic brand of football to our great fans," owner Daniel M. Snyder said in a news release.

"His ability to energize players and teams is unprecedented. The Redskins deserve to be back at the Super Bowl, and I am immensely confident that Steve is the coach to get us there."

Spurrier, who will be introduced at a news conference Tuesday night, replaces Marty Schottenheimer.

Snyder, the Redskins' impetuous owner, long has been smitten with Spurrier and his flashy offensive expertise at the University of Florida. Snyder tried to lure Spurrier away from the Gators last season before giving Schottenheimer a four-year, $10-million US contract.

Spurrier resigned from Florida on Jan. 4 following 12 successful years running the Gators program. He said he was seeking an NFL job.

Schottenheimer was fired Sunday night after he refused to renegotiate a clause in his contract that gave him ultimate authority on player moves.
