Holdout Kaberle sticks to guns

Last Updated: Tuesday, October 16, 2001 | 8:30 PM ET

Holdout defenceman Tomas Kaberle isn't sounding as if he's about to lessen his contract demands and sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"I would love to be helping the Leafs right now," Kaberle, speaking from the Czech Republic, told the Globe and Mail.

"But, unfortunately, I don't have a contract. I believe I deserve what I'm asking for.

"Hopefully, things will work out."

The latest offer from the Leafs to the restricted free agent is three years for $4.75 million US.

He wants more than $5 million US in a three-year pact.

Kaberle was Toronto's top-scoring defenceman the last two seasons.

Only three NHL defencemen since 1991 have higher point totals than Kaberle in their first three seasons -- Florida's Robert Svehla, the Rangers' Bryan Berard and Edmonton's Janne Niinimaa.
