Dreifort retired the first 17 batters as the Dodgers cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Montreal Expos.
Los Angeles grabbed a 2-0 lead on a run-scoring single by former Expo Mark Grudzielanek in the third inning and a leadoff home run by Tom Goodwin in the sixth.
But the story was Dreifort, who went to a three-ball count on only four hitters as he was perfect through 5 2/3 innings.

He had eight strikeouts through five innings.
Montreal finally reached Dreifort (3-2) in the sixth in an unlikely manner.
After Andy Tracy and Michael Barrett were retired, Dreifort walked opposing pitcher Britt Reames to end his bid for a perfect game.
Orlando Cabrera followed by lacing a double down the right field line to break up the no-hitter as well as the shutout as Reames scored.
It seemed to unnerve Dreifort, who hit Geoff Blum, uncorked a wild pitch and walked Lee Stevens to load the bases.
But Dreifort got Vladimir Guerrero to ground out to end the threat.
He was pulled for a pinch hitter in the seventh after throwing 102 pitches, yielding one run and one hit while striking out nine.
Los Angeles got some much-needed breathing room in the eighth inning.
Grudzielanek greeted reliever Scott Strickland with a single and Gary Sheffield walked.
Shawn Green followed with a three-run blast for a 5-1 lead.
A sacrifice fly by Blum in the eighth inning pulled the Expos within three runs, but Eric Karros delivered a two-run single in the ninth for the final margin.
The Expos loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Matt Herges got Cabrera to ground out to end the game.
Grudzielanek had three hits and Green added three RBI for Los Angeles.
Karros went 1-for-4 on the same day a 45-year-old Southern California man was charged with stalking and making threats to the Dodgers first baseman.
Reames (2-5) lost his fifth straight decision despite allowing just two runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Cabrera had two of the Expos' six hits as they had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Stevens was 0-for-3, ending his 10-game hitting streak.
