Last Updated: Tuesday, October 17, 2000 | 10:34 PM ET

Defending champion Real Madrid and last season's runner-up Valencia guaranteed themselves a place in the second phase of the Champions League on Tuesday, with England's Arsenal also booking its spot in the final 16.

In Madrid, Real won its Group A match 5-3 over Bayer Leverkusen on two goals by Jose Maria Gutierrez.

In Group C, Valencia won 2-1 at Lyon, leaving the Spaniards as the only side in the 32-team field with a perfect record.

Arsenal clinched its place from Group B as Frenchman Robert Pires -- a hero of France's European championship team -- scored two minutes from the end to rally for a 1-1 draw at Rome's Lazio.

It was Arsenal's first draw after three victories.

In other results, it was: Sporting Lisbon 0, Spartak Moscow 3; Shakhtar Donetsk 2, Sparta Prague 1; Heerenveen 1, Olympiakos 0; Sturm Graz 2, Monaco 0 and Rangers 0, Galatasaray 0.

On Wednesday, it is: Deportivo versus Juventus, Panathinaikos versus Hamburg, Bayern Munich versus Paris Saint-Germain, Helsingborg versus Rosenborg, Anderlecht versus Dynamo Kuiv, Manchester United versus PSV Eindhoven, Besiktas versus Leeds and AC Milan versus Barcelona.

Group A

Real Madrid 5, Bayer Leverkusen 3

At Madrid, Jose Maria Gutierrez scored twice and Luis Figo had two assists and converted a penalty to lead Real Madrid to the victory and a place in the next round of 16. Real Madrid's other goals came from Ivan Helguera and Raul Gonzalez. Thomas Brdaric, Ulf Kirsten and Paulo Roberto Rink scored for Levekusen.

Sporting Lisbon 0, Spartak Moscow 3

At Lisbon, Yegor Titov scored twice and Sporting chipped in another goal -- an own-goal by Manuel Dimas -- as Spartak Moscow cruised to victory. Spartak has nine points and is near clinching the other place from the group. The Portuguese have one and are eliminated.

Group B

Lazio 1, Arsenal 1

At Rome, Robert Pires' breakaway goal with two minutes to go lifted Arsenal to the draw and moved the English to the second round. France's Pires capitalized on a rare defensive lapse from Lazio captain Alessandro Nesta and calmly put a right-footed shot over 'keeper Angelo Peruzzi. The Roman squad, which got a Pavel Nedved goal in the 24th minute, is alone in second place with seven points.

Shakhtar Donetsk 2, Sparta Prague 1

At Donetsk, Ukraine, Shakhtar Donetsk won as Hennadii Zubov got the winner in the 87th minute on a penalty. The Ukraine side has three points and Prague also has three. Sparta's Jiri Jarosik opened the scoring in the 16th minute with Dainius Gleveckas equalizing in the 35th.

Group C

Heerenveen 1, Olympiakos 0

At Heerenveen, Netherlands, Danish forward Daniel Jensen headed in a free kick to give Dutch club Heerenveen the upset over Greek champion Olympiakos Piraeus. It was Heerenveen's first win after three losses. Olympiakos has six points and is No. 2 in the group.

Olympique Lyonnais 1, Valencia 2

At Lyon, France, Valencia won its fourth game in four as Juan Sanchez scored in the 45th minute and Ruben Baraja got the clincher in the 86th. Steve Marlet scored for Lyon in the 90th. Valencia has 12 points and Lyon three.

Group D

Sturm Graz 2, Monaco 0

At Graz, Austria, Markus Schopp scored twice as the Austrians won their second game in the group, giving them six and putting them into the chase with Rangers and Galatasaray. The win came before a sellout of 15,400 at Arnold Schwarzenegger stadium. It was sweet revenge for Sturm which suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of Monaco in the away match last month.

Rangers 0 Galatasaray 0

At Glasgow, Rangers and Galatasaray played the scoreless draw, which left both sides sharing the lead in the group with seven points. Galatasaray defeated Rangers 3-2 last month in Istanbul.
