Police have arrested the third suspect in the stabbing of Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce.

William Ragland, 28, was apprehended Friday morning after authorities staked out his girlfriend's home.

He pleaded innocent to charges of assault and battery and was ordered held on $50,000 US cash bail.

The arrest came less than 24 hours after Pierce was released from hospital.

Pierce was stabbed 11 times at a Boston night club early Monday morning. He underwent surgery later that day to repair the damaged lung and to close stab wounds to his face, neck and back.

Upon his release from the New England Medical Center Thursday, Pierce addressed a crowd of well-wishers.

"I can't wait to get back on the basketball court and join my Celtics teammates," Pierce, 22, told the crowd.

The other two men arrested in connection with the attack pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon Thursday. They were ordered held on $15,000 US bail.

Tony McCrary, 31, also known as Tony Hurston, and Trevor Watson, 34, surrendered to police Wednesday night.

Prosecutors said Hurston approached from behind and hit Pierce over the head with a bottle. Then, according to both prosecutors and police, Watson and Ragland attacked Pierce with a knife.

All three accused are reported to be connected to the rap group Made Men.

Hurston's attorney, John Swomley, said Hurston was not involved in the attack and has never met Pierce. Swomley also represents Made Men.

A first-round pick in the 1998 NBA draft, Pierce averaged 19.5 points and ranked second in the NBA in steals with 2.08 a game last season.
