Kansas City Chiefs preview

Last Updated: Friday, September 1, 2000 | 1:04 AM ET

Record in 1999: 9-7 Odds to win Super Bowl XXXV: 35-1

Key Arrivals: LB Lew Bush, WR Sylvester Morris, OL Brenden Stai, P Todd Sauerbrun

Key Departures: DT Tom Barndt, WR Joe Horn, WR Andre Rison, LB Derrick Thomas, KR Tamarick Vanover

Gunther Cunningham on 2000: "Five new coaches, six new personnel people, a new director of football operations. We've rebuilt the training room downstairs, built an extra practice field and knocked down half the parking lot."

The Skinny: The winds of change blew through Arrowhead Stadium, but Gunther Cunningham will be hard-pressed to point the Chiefs in the right direction.

Kansas City is coming off a horrendous off-season which decimated its once-fruitful roster.

All-Pro Derrick Thomas died, Dave Szott was stricken with a blood clot pass through his heart, while scandal struck Bam Morris (drugs), Andre Rison (bad cheques) and Tamarick Vanover (car theft) .

Courtesy 18 newcomers, the Chiefs are younger and deeper, but much more inexperienced.

For example, third-year cornerback Eric Warfield replaces Cris Dishman and sophomore safety Larry Atkins takes Reggie Tongue's spot on a defence also featuring five newcomers.

Second-year running back Mike McCloud is slated to start, but was unable to shake veteran Tony Richardson and rookie Frank Moreau during training camp.

Thankfully, Elvis (Grbac) has not left the building.
