The Sports Day in Canada broadcast - Saturday, September 29
The national day of sport celebration will be marked by a compelling television event airing on CBC Sports. The Sports Day in Canada broadcast will profile several standout cities that embody the Sports Day experience, unified by a national anchor, Scott Russell. From these towns, we will share the stories, the passion and the power of community sport with Canadians. In the weeks leading up to Sports Day in Canada, CBC Sports will air weekly broadcast vignettes to raise awareness and drive participation of organizations and the general public in Sports Day in Canada.
Community Engagement - week of September 22 - 29
In the week leading up to, and including, September 29, thousands of organizations across Canada will throw open their doors to celebrate sport at the local level, and help build momentum for Sports Day. On the ground in communities across the country, sport organizations and providers will hold a blitz of Sports Day in Canada events, with festivals, open houses, games, competitions, meet-and-greets, try-it days, tournaments, fun runs, spectator events and pep rallies that celebrate sport at all levels. Organizations can create something new, or throw open their doors to something they're already doing--and invite Canadians to lace up and join them. Wherever possible, elite athletes, celebrities, politicians, Paralympians and Olympians will be making special appearances at Sports Day in Canada events in communities across the country.
Jersey Day - Friday, September 28
Back again as a popular part of the Sports Day celebrations, Friday, September 28 is a national day to show your love and support for sport by wearing a jersey, team or club uniform to school, work or play. From municipal council chambers to the National Capital to news desks, office buildings and classrooms across the nation, we envision a sea of Canadians wearing their hearts on their sleeves on national Jersey Day.
About the power of sport
Sport has the power to reduce crime, foster character and citizenship, introduce newcomers to their communities, stimulate the local economy, provide adult mentorship for young people, teach kids important life lessons and strengthen community connectedness. Unfortunately, sport participation is on the decline in our country. Over the past two decades, sport participation rates in Canadian youth aged 15 to 18 dropped from 77% to 59% - and in adults, from 45% to 28%. Over half of Canadian adults are considered inactive, and only 7% of our children and youth are active enough to meet Canada's Physical Activity Guidelines.
The Canadian Sport Week Committee
Sports Day in Canada is spearheaded by CBC Sports, ParticipACTION and True Sport and guided by the Canadian Sport Week Committee. Together, these organizations are developing Sports Day in Canada and are committed to engaging their own sporting networks and communities to join the movement:
