Olivier Jean of Canada won gold in the men's 500-metre race on Saturday at the world short-track speedskating championships.
Jean, from Lachenaie, Que., won in a time of 41.077 seconds while teammate Charles Hamelin of Sainte-Julie, Que., was second in 41.186. South Korean skater Kwak Yoon-gy took third place with a time of 41.479.
China's Fan Kexin won the women's 500-metre race with a time of 44.438, .29 seconds ahead of Italy's Arianna Fontana. Lana Gehring of the United States was third in 44.815 seconds.
Six championship races will be held Sunday when the 1,000- and 3,000-metre men's and women's races and relays over 3,000 metres for women and 5,000 for men take place.
