Canadian short-track veteran Marie-Eve Drolet will miss the upcoming speed skating season as she is expecting her first child at the end of January.

Drolet, 32, won a bronze medal in the women's relay event at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and took silver in the same event earlier this year in Sochi.

"This is great news for me and my partner," Drolet said Wednesday in a release. "My pregnancy is going great so far and I cross my fingers that everything will go well until the baby arrives."

Drolet, from Saguenay, Que., has won 27 medals in senior international competitions over her career.

She hopes to return to the national team in the future and compete at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
