Toronto FC made history Friday when the club officially unveiled Julian de Guzman as the team's first-ever designated player.

De Guzman distinguished himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Spanish league with Deportivo la Coruna the past four seasons, and the Scarborough, Ont., native is generally considered one of the best players ever produced by Canada.

But some fans are questioning Toronto FC general manager Mo Johnston's decision to use the DP spot on de Guzman when the team already has so much midfield depth.

What do you think?

Did Johnston make the right move in making de Guzman the first designated player? Or should the Toronto GM have spent the money on a forward or central defender?
