Trio of Canadians among invites to MLS Combine
Kyle Bekker, Emery Welshman, Kofi Opare some of 54 NCAA seniors to get the call
Canadians Kyle Bekker, Emery Welshman and Kofi Opare were among the 54 NCAA seniors invited to the 2013 Major League Soccer Combine.
Bekker, a midfielder at Boston College and native of Oakville, Ont., made the all-ACC first team for the second consecutive year, and finished this past season tied for the team lead with four assists.
He also helped Canada reach the semifinals at the 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament last March, starting two of the three games in group play plus the semifinal versus Mexico.
Welshman, a Mississauga, Ont., native, was the second leading scorer in Pac-12 for Oregon State University with 10 goals, and earned first team all-Conference honours for the second year in a row.
Opare, a defender from Niagara Falls, Ont., helped guide a University of Michigan back line that surrendered 1.15 goals per match.
All 54 players will be eligible for selection in the 2013 SuperDraft on Jan. 17 in Indianapolis.
The players will be divided into four squads and will play matches on Jan. 11, 13 and 15.
The draft comprises of two rounds and 38 overall selections.
