Marouane Chamakh scored with a late header to give French league leader Bordeaux a 1-0 win over Lyon on Sunday.
The defending champions top the standings with 34 points from 16 matches, four clear of second-place Montpellier, which has a game in hand.
Bordeaux earned its fifth straight victory in all competitions and opened up an eight-point gap on Lyon, which fell to ninth place.
France playmaker Yoann Gourcuff outpaced Jean-Alain Boumsong before sending a high cross to the far post where Morocco forward Chamakh outjumped Anthony Reveillere to head home in the 86th minute.
In a tactical first half, Lyon created the first chance in the eighth minute when Argentine forward Lisandro Lopez headed a cross from Reveillere straight into Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso's arms.
Bordeaux replied with a header from Chamakh that was saved by France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the 29th minute.
The defending champion gradually took control of the match in the second half. Brazilian midfielder Fernando Menegazzo hit a bouncing volley just wide of the post in the 58th minute before substitute Jussie pulled the ball back for Chamakh, who fired over the bar from 12 metres in the 78th.
Frustrated by the tight Bordeaux defence, Lyon attempted to score with long-range strikes, forcing Carrasso to punch away a 25-metre swerving shot from Maxime Gonalons in the 76th.
Also on Sunday, it was: Toulouse 0, Montpellier 1; Monaco 0, Lille 4; Paris Saint-Germain 3, Saint-Etienne 0 and Sochaux 1, Grenoble 0.
Souleymane Camara volleyed into the top corner in the 10th minute to help Montpellier retain second place.
Montpellier president Louis Nicollin said he couldn't believe that his team already had 30 points at this stage of the season.
"I'm hallucinating!" Nicollin said. "If we beat Bordeaux, it will mean that we're contending for the title."
Montpellier plays Bordeaux on Wednesday.
Toulouse midfielder Luan of Brazil contracted swine flu and was quarantined.
Lille forward Tulio de Melo scored with a low shot from the edge of the box in the 39th before adding a second goal with a header in the 55th. Yohan Cabaye converted a penalty in the 72nd after Monaco defender Adriano had fouled Gervinho and was sent off.
Gabon forward Pierre Aubameyang finished the rout in the 85th.
Lille climbed to third place with 28 points, tied with Marseille. Monaco's third straight loss saw it slip to 12th place with 22 points.
"We used to be serious and rigorous," Monaco coach Guy Lacombe said. "We must rediscover that."
Monaco rose to second place after 10 games, but it has been in free fall since then.
PSG found the net twice within three minutes against Saint-Etienne. Peguy Luyindula converted a rebound in the 11th, and Benin playmaker Stephane Sessegnon outpaced the Saint-Etienne defence to fire home a diagonal shot in the 13th.
Turkey forward Mevlut Erding notched his sixth goal of the season to make it 3-0 with a header in the 39th off a free kick by Christophe Jallet.
Sochaux winger Yassin Mikari scored from close range in the 28th following an assist from Stephane Dalmat.
Last-place Grenoble had a chance to level in the 41st when Japan midfielder Daisuke Matsui was fouled inside the area. But Sochaux goalkeeper Teddy Richert stopped Danijel Ljuboja's penalty.
Sochaux climbed to 13th place with 22 points.
