Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero was given the nod over his two teammates on Tuesday to win the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award.

The Barranquilla, Colombia, native scored 12 goals to lead his team, and added seven assists. The 22-year-old was up against keeper Kasey Keller and midfielder Freddie Ljungberg.

The award goes to the top athlete in his first MLS season with previous pro experience, making a player ineligible for the rookie award.

Toronto FC keeper Stefan Frei is among the finalists for the Rookie of the Year Award, which will be handed down on Thursday.

Zach Thornton of Chivas USA added a second honour on Tuesday after being deemed Comeback Player of the Year. Thornton last week was named the top goalie.

Chicago Fire forward Brian McBride and D.C. United midfielder Ben Olsen were the other finalists.
