Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez has surprisingly named midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro in his squad to face Costa Rica in a two-game playoff for a spot in next year's World Cup finals in South Africa.

Loderio, who played for Uruguay in the recent under-20 World Cup in Egypt, makes his first appearance in the full national squad after impressing team officials with his attacking play and powerful shot.

Uruguay plays at Costa Rica on Nov. 14, with the home leg on Nov. 18. The winner of the two-game series gets the final berth from the Americas in the World Cup.

Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Argentina have qualified from South America, and the United States, Mexico and Honduras have the spots from North and Central America and the Caribbean.
