The nine group-winners qualify for the 2010 World Cup. The eight-best second-place teams will be paired off in a series of two-game playoffs (home and away). The four playoff winners advance to the 2010 World Cup.

GROUP 1

WHO'S STILL ALIVE: Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Hungary

WHO'S ELIMINATED: Albania, Malta

OCT. 10 GAMES: Denmark vs. Sweden, Portugal vs. Hungary

DENMARK will qualify for the 2010 World Cup

  • if they beat Sweden

DENMARK will secure at least a UEFA playoff berth

  • if Portugal ties Hungary

GREECE will only be able to qualify for the 2010 World Cup via the UEFA playoffs

NORWAY will be eliminated from contention if

  • Sweden beats Denmark (in Group 1), AND if the Greece-Latvia game (in Group 2) does not end in a tie, AND if Slovenia beats Slovakia (in Group 3) AND if Bosnia and Herzegovina does not lose to Estonia (in Group 5), AND if France beats Faroe Islands (in Group 7), AND if Ireland does not lose to Italy (in Group 8).
