After an unfulfilling spell with Chelsea, Andriy Shevchenko is returning to his home country, joining Ukraine's Dynamo Kiev on a two-year contract, the team said Saturday.

It's where the former European player of the year began his career before moving on to Italy's AC Milan and then Chelsea.

Shevchenko spent last season back at Milan on loan from Chelsea after failing to impress at Stamford Bridge in his first two seasons with the club. Chelsea bought Shevchenko from Milan before the 2006-07 season for a club record £30 million ($53 million Cdn).

The 32-year-old wrote off around £5 million ($8.9 million Cdn) in unpaid salary from the Blues so he could move on a free transfer to his old club.

Shevchenko is second on Milan's all-time goal list and has won the Serie A scoring title twice (1999-2000, 03-04).

But he only had nine goals in 47 league appearances for Chelsea in his two seasons there before moving back to Milan on loan.
