The Press Association says Manchester police are investigating an allegation of common assault by Mourinho.
Mourinho, a former Chelsea manager, allegedly punched a fan near the Inter team bus as he left the stadium following his team's 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
The report says police have contacted United to request CCTV footage of the area.
United say they are aware of the allegation but are making no further comment.
