Leitch, 29, had two assists in 17 matches last season with the Red Bulls, who signed him as a free agent on July 5, 2007.
"This move gives us more roster flexibility as we prepare for the start of the MLS season," Red Bulls sporting director Jeff Agoos said.
Leitch has notched six assists in 138 MLS matches since he was drafted out of North Carolina in the fourth round (47th overall) by the Columbus Crew in 2002.
He also played for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars from 2003-05.
