Canada dropped a 3-0 decision on the road to Jamaica Wednesday night, ending its unsuccessful World Cup qualifying on a losing note.
Canada came into the match with no chance of advancing to the CONCACAF zone's final round of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after being officially eliminated following a 3-1 loss to Honduras last month.
Canada failed to win a single game in the CONCACAF semifinals, after defeating St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the previous round.
"We are disappointed," said Canadian head coach Dale Mitchell. "We started off with the two home games. You start with the first two games at home and you have some pressure."
With a final record of 0-4-2, Canada finished in last place in its CONCACAF semifinal qualifying group with two points. Honduras (12 points) and Mexico (10 points) finished 1-2 in the group to advance to the final stage of CONCACAF qualifying.
"I believe our team was competitive with all three teams in the group, we played them close, but haven't had enough to get the wins," Mitchell said. "That has been the story of our campaign."
Jamaica, also with 10 points but a worse goal difference than Mexico, finished third and like Canada was eliminated from World Cup contention.
The top three nations in the final qualifying round, which features six teams, advance to the World Cup, while the fourth plays the fifth-place South American team in a playoff with another berth at stake.
Jamaica opened the scoring with a goal from Luton Shelton in the 27th minute when he sidestepped Canadian goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld and slid the ball into an open net.
Marlon King scored on a penalty shot in the 58th minute to make it 2-0, and substitute Omar Cummings capped the scoring for Jamaica with four minutes left in regulation.
Canada fielded a young team and was missing veterans Dwayne De Rosario, Julian de Guzman and Tomasz Radzinski.
"It wasn't the team that we would have normally have, but I thought they competed well," Mitchell said. "Maybe (it would have been different) if we had got the goal in the first half. I thought Donovan Ricketts made an outstanding save on Kevin Harmse and that kept the game at one-nil.
"I was pleased because our younger players will benefit from the experience tonight."
Team captain and defender Paul Stalteri earned his 74th appearance for Canada's national team.
