Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is dismissing Tottenham's complaint about United's attempt to lure striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Ferguson's rejection of the complaint came the day after Spurs chairman Daniel Levy issued a statement regarding United's conduct, calling it an act of "sheer arrogance and interference."

Ferguson disputed the statement and said Saturday that Levy should withdraw his complaint because comments attributed to him about Berbatov were misreported.

Ferguson said on Thursday that United was making a bid for a player that would be an asset to the club. He did not specifically name Berbatov, but he is believed to be the subject of the statement.

"It is going to be very embarrassing for them," Ferguson told reporters after United's 1-1 draw against the Kaizer Chiefs. "But you know what Daniel Levy is like. He's different."

Levy said United has been trying to make a deal with Berbatov for more than a year.

Such action would be in defiance of Premier League rules, which require permission from a team before talks between a player and another club.

Levy called Ferguson "unbelievably hypocritical," referring to a failed complaint to FIFA concerning Real Madrid's pursuit of United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

Berbatov has been with Tottenham since 2006, when he came from Bayer Leverkusen in a four-year deal. He scored 23 goals in 52 appearances last season.

He put the Spurs over Chelsea in the League Cup final 2-1 with a penalty kick goal.
