New York Red Bulls star Claudio Reyna retired on Wednesday. (Tony Gutierrez/Associated Press)New York Red Bulls midfielder Claudio Reyna announced his retirement on Wednesday, less than two seasons after returning from Europe.
The announcement hardly came as a surprise as Reyna, who turns 35 on July 20, has been hampered by back and hamstring problems.
Reyna signed with New York as a designated player on Jan. 27, 2007.
The Livingston, N.J., native had just three assists in 21 games with the Red Bulls last season. Reyna hasn't scored in six games this season and last played in a 5-1 loss to the Chicago Fire on May 25.
Reyna, nicknamed Captain America, tallied eight goals in 112 appearances with the U.S. national squad before retiring from international soccer following the 2006 World Cup.
He represented the U.S. in the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cups as well as the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.
Reyna spent 12 seasons in Europe, suiting up with Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Rangers, Sunderland and Manchester City, which terminated his contract the day before he signed with New York.
