CBC Sports is adding an international flavour to Soccer Day in Canada.
The CBC announced Wednesday that Saturday's Toronto FC-Los Angeles Galaxy Major League Soccer game, part of CBC Sports' second annual Soccer Day in Canada program, will feature play-by-play commentary in Punjabi and Mandarin.
While the Toronto-L.A. contest will air over the main CBC network with CBC Sports' commentators Nigel Reed and Jason de Vos calling the action in English, viewers can also watch the game with Punjabi and Mandarin commentary online at CBCSports.ca.
Parminder Singh, host of Omni Television's Punjabi-language program Chardi Kalaa, will handle play-by-play for the Punjabi language broadcasts, alongside analyst and CBC Radio reporter Harnaryan Singh.
Jason Wang, Mandarin play-by-play voice for the 2007 Vancouver Whitecaps' home broadcasts on webcast radio and Shaw Multicultural Channel, will call the game in Mandarin.
Parminder Singh and Harnaryan Singh, and Wang have already been providing coverage of the 2008 Stanley Cup final in their respective languages as part of the CBC's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast package.
This year's Soccer Day in Canada broadcast, which begins Saturday at noon ET, celebrates the sport known as "the beautiful game" and provides a snapshot from fields across the country of soccer's growing popularity in Canada.
The program will examine soccer's current impact on Canadian society, with a particular focus on the phenomenal growth of the game at the grassroots level.
Soccer Day in Canada will present minor league soccer games from Halifax, Winnipeg and Red Deer, Alta., and will also feature stories from other cities across Canada.
