Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment is in talks to purchase English soccer club Leeds United, British newspaper the Sunday Mirror reported on its website.

Citing unnamed sources, the Mirror reported preliminary talks between Leeds and MLSE have already taken place. Leeds chairman Ken Bates would not confirm the discussions occurred.

MLSE president Richard Peddie and chief financial officer Ian Clarke visited England last month and met officials from a number of clubs, including Southampton and Reading.

MLSE owns the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors, American Hockey League team Toronto Marlies and Major League Soccer franchise Toronto FC.

Leeds currently plays in League One, England's third professional division.
