With the score tied 2-2, Altidore took centre stage.
Four minutes into the second half, the teenager took a pass from teammate Clint Mathis in stride and coolly slotted the ball past Galaxy goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
His second goal brought the New York crowd to its feet.
After picking up a pass on the left wing, Altidore cut into the Galaxy box before gliding past two Los Angeles players and rifling home a shot that beat Cannon at the near post.
With the match headed for a 4-4 draw, New York's Juan Pablo Angel notched the game winner in the closing minutes.
This marks the first time Altidore has received the MLS player of the week award. In 15 games this season, he has scored seven goals and assisted on four others.
Altidore recently played for the United States at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada and is considered one of the top young prospects in the game.
