Dwayne De Rosario scored twice as Canada defeated Haiti 2-0 in CONCACAF Gold Cup action Monday in Miami, earning a spot in the quarter-finals.

Canada finished with two wins and six points to secure first place in Group A and a quarter-final berth Saturday in Foxboro, Mass., where the team will play the second-place finisher in Group B.

Costa Rica, which defeated Guadeloupe 1-0 earlier Monday, also advanced to the second round. Costa Rica and Guadeloupe had four points, but Costa Rica advanced on a head-to-head tiebreaker.

Guadeloupe could still move into the quarter-finals as one of the top two third-place finishers.

De Rosario gave Canada a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when the Houston Dynamo star took a long, lofty cross from Paul Stalteri on the right side and hit a one-time volley from almost parallel to the goal-line past goalkeeper Gabart Fenelon.

"My game is to create and score goals and when I get a chance at that in the box my main objective is to see if I can score," De Rosario said. "The goalie came off the post anticipating the cross. I just hit it low as hard as I could and fortunately it went in the back of the net."

Just three minutes later, De Rosario converted on a penalty kick after Issey Nakajima-Farran was fouled by a Haitian defender inside the penalty area. Fenelon got a piece of De Rosario's low shot inside the left post, but there was still enough pace on the ball to give Canada a 2-0 lead.

Hard collision

National team veteran Pat Onstad collected the shutout and withstood a rough collision in the second half.

Onstad, who missed Saturday's 2-1 loss to Guadeloupe because of commitments to his MLS club Houston Dynamo and only arrived in Miami Monday afternoon from Columbus, got the worst of a challenge in the 54th minute.

The 39-year-old keeper was forced to challenge for a ball after a slow back pass from a teammate. As he slid to clear the ball out of danger, he crashed into Haiti's Ricardo Pierre-Louis and banged his head hard on the turf.

Onstad took several minutes to get up and after consulting with medical staff stayed in the game. Any question about his health was answered moments later as he had to make a point-blank save at the near post.

"Luckily Pat is made of some tough stuff," said Canadian head coach Stephen Hart. "He stood in there."

Haiti played the final 15 minutes with 10 men after their captain, Pierre-Richard Bruny, was red carded after elbowing Canadian Kevin Harmse in the face.

Harmse was chasing Bruny and the ball deep in the Canadian zone near the corner flag when the incident happened. Harmse, who had just subbed into the match for midfielder Julian De Guzman, was treated on the sideline and returned to the game.
