Pre-game: Slovenia vs. United States
Day 8, Match 2
Slovenia vs. United States, Group C
Date and Location
June 18, Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg
Live on CBC and CBCSports.ca (9:30 a.m. ET). Consult CBC's full broadcast schedule.
What's at stake
Slovenia is the surprise leader in Group C, sitting in first place with three points after its 1-0 win over Algeria. The U.S. is tied for second, with England, on one point after salvaging a 1-1 draw with the Three Lions, thanks in large part to Robert Green's goalkeeping gaffe.
The Slovenians can all but book their spot in the next round with a victory over the Americans. Even a draw would leave them in a very strong position to move on.
The Americans can ill afford to lose or tie this game. They need to take three points against Slovenia in order to stay even with England (who is expected to beat Algeria).

Midfielders Aleksandar Radosavljevic and Andrej Komac earned yellow card in Slovenia's previous match. If either one receives another against the U.S., they will be suspended for their country's final game of the group stage.
Defenders Steve Cherundolo and Jay DeMerit, and forward Robbie Findley are in a similar predicament for the U.S.
Player to watch for the U.S.
Jozy Altidore — The American forward caused the English defence plenty of problems with his speed and strength, and came close to scoring a few times. He somehow failed to get on the score sheet in that game, so he's due against Slovenia.
Player to watch for Slovenia
Robert Koren — He scored the game-winner against Algeria and had some nice touches on the ball throughout the game. The Slovenian captain is a deft dribbler, able to work his way out of trouble with his quick feet, while taking the ball with him.
Robert Koren vs. Landon Donovan — They are their country's best players, but they are so much more than that. They are experience and inspirational team leaders who both have a knack for influencing the game with a moment of brilliance in an instant.
"We have confidence after the win against Algeria and we will give [the U.S. and England] a good game. Hopefully after the match with the USA we will still be top of the group." — midfielder Robert Koren
"In all likelihood, if we lose we are out of the tournament." — midfielder Landon Donovan
All time head-to-head
