Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo says soccer star Salvador Cabanas is hopeful, talking and exercising after he was shot in the head in a Mexico City bar last month.

Cabanas was playing for Club America of Mexico's Primera Division and was attacked in the washroom of the bar that he'd visited with his wife.

Lugo said the Paraguayan striker was very lucid and had "a lot of hope" during a talk at the hospital on Sunday. Cabanas had been expected to lead Paraguay's national team at the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

Lugo was in Mexico for the Rio Group summit. He showed off a Club America T-shirt that Cabanas signed, and said the player is already exercising on a stationary bike.

The man suspected of shooting Cabanas is still at large.
