Nigeria has hired Swedish coach Lars Lagerback to lead the Super Eagles at the World Cup.

The Nigerian Football Federation announced the hiring Saturday on its website.

Nigeria fired head coach Shaibu Amodu after the team came in third during the African Cup of Nations. Lagerback resigned as Sweden coach in October after his team failed to qualify for the World Cup.

As co-coach, Lagerback led Sweden to the last five major tournaments, starting at the 2000 European Championship.

Nigeria has drawn a difficult World Cup group with Argentina, Greece and South Korea.
