Mourinho's smugness knows no bounds

I want to punch Jose Mourinho in the face.
The Portuguese manager is one of the game's top tacticians, but he's also smug and disingenuous.
Fans saw a perfect example of this on the weekend as Chelsea robbed Liverpool of three points and walked away with a 1-1 draw at Anfield.
Liverpool sat on a 1-0 lead when Chelsea was gifted a 62nd-minute penalty by referee Rob Styles. Forward Florent Malouda jumped into Steve Finnan as a cross came over from the right and Styles ruled that the Liverpool defender was guilty of the foul.
Frank Lampard scored from the penalty spot.
It was a ridiculous call and anyone with half of brain could see that, but Mourinho remained steadfast in his belief that Styles was correct in making the decision to award Chelsea the bogus penalty.
"When Malouda opens his legs to let the ball go through to Didier Drogba he is kicked from behind, I think it is a penalty," Mourinho said after the game.
The Portuguese manager went on to defend his team against charges levelled by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard that Chelsea players intimidated Styles into making the penalty call.
"I think I have a naive team because we don't have divers, don't have violent people, nasty tacklers and don't have people diving in the swimming pool. Chelsea are a pure and naive team," Mourinho said.
Oh please!
Didier Drogba isn't a diver? Michael Essien isn't a nasty tackler? Chelsea naïve?
It is to laugh.
As for Mourinho's assertion that it was a penalty, kudos to him for maintaining a straight face and not bursting out laughing because Styles' penalty decision was absolutely comical.
Styles publicly apologized for his mistake on Monday and acknowledged he made the wrong call.
Don't expect Mourinho to retract his statement, though. Admitting he was wrong is not part of Mourinho's makeup.
WEEKEND WATCH:
Toronto FC watch: Toronto dropped a 2-0 decision to Chivas USA at home on Saturday. Having now gone 552 consecutive minutes without a goal, Toronto is just six minutes short of breaking the Major League Soccer record for scoring futility set by Real Salt Lake in 2005. The expansion franchise's last goal came on July 7 in a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire. Toronto's last win was against Salt Lake on July 4.
Best goal: Has to be Schalke defender Christian Pander's effort against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Pander curled a free kick from 25 yards out over the Dortmund wall in the 31st minute to give Schalke a 2-0 lead.
Best game: It's not often that one game produces nine goals, but the New York Red Bulls and Los Angeles Galaxy put on quite the show Saturday before 66,000 fans at Giants Stadium. Juan Pablo Angel won the battle of superstars against David Beckham by scoring two goals, including the game winner in the 88th minute, to lift New York to a thrilling 5-4 win.
Best player: Freddie Kanoute scored a hat-trick as Sevilla beat Real Madrid 5-3 on Sunday to win the Spanish Supercup for the first time in club history. Kanoute was a bust during his stint in England with West Ham United and Tottenham, but the Mali star has blossomed into one of the game's top strikers in Spain.
Biggest upset: Marama Vahirua scored twice to lead Lorient to a 2-1 win over six-time defending French champions Olympique Lyon on Saturday. The victory elevated Lorient to the top of the Ligue 1 standings. Lyon, which has now lost its last two league games, is 11th.

you have to give credit where credit is due .. Mourinho and the rest of Mickey Mouse FC robbed 2 points from a game they didn't deserve to win .. hopefully this comes back to haunt them when we go to the bridge in the reverse fixture .. time to break that unbeaten streak ..

Cry hard you "luckypool" fans, it was time your luck run out and good it was against chelsea. I really enjoyed to get this incorrect decision because it seemed all of them go for "Luckypool" but with this one is enough. About divers, Fercho Torres is good one, Steven Gerrard is a master of it, bad tacklers Sisoko is the best example and even Gerrard. How many times has he done a sliding challenge and gone away with it.At least he is got a yellow. So please lets move on and stop the nonsense!

Stop crying i do not support either side but one thing i know liverpool/especially gerrard always gets away with double feet tackles and 80%of the time not even given a warning so when a decision like that goes your way you take it.

With all respect you're over-reacting. Sure it was a bad call, but they happen all the time. Liverpool got a free kick a week earlier, (that they didn't deserve) and scored the winning free kick on it. That's football. They only have one ref and don't use instant replay - til then, these mistakes will happen.
As to Mourinho, he is no worse than Arsene Wegner, Sir alex or Benitez, so to attack him is wrong here, attack the ref, and the leauge. Besides Mourinho did admit the third card to Essien.

Love him or hate him, Mourinho equates to success. Level-headed fans of Benfica and Sporting in Portugal have come around to acknowledging his ability and accomplishments with Porto and now Chelsea. His comments are usually made with the intention of giving his team some sort of psychological edge and they often do.
My hope is that he will one day fulfill his promise and lead the Portuguese National Team to even greater heights.

What is Mourinho spose to say about the penaltyshot."The ref made the wrong decision we shouldn't of won!?!" And are you saying that none of liverpool players dive? Please if I didn't know that liverpool was soccer team i would think they are swimming team with all the dives they have.

Hahah...It must really be painful..to be cheated like that out of a goal!! Hahah...Welcome to the Club!
It's about time Liverpool suffer a little because with the comments Benitez and the rest of the media keep on making about Mourinho, Ronaldo, etc, they deserve it!
You're all just jealous...and most of all blind!
Remember Liverpool's goal against Chelsea in the Champions League? The one that didn't go in? Yeah...among others, did Benitez or the ref apologize?? Besides, if you visit Chelsea's website and read Mourinho's comments...you'd read that he said he couldn't say anything about the penalty...until he saw it again on tv!
I think someone else deserves a punch in the face: It's all those less skillful that try to break Ronaldo's legs, blame Mourinho for everything and only see what they want to see! Life is hard, isnt it? Hahah...Mourinho already knew that!!
Go Chelsea!

Of all the teams who should NEVER complain about bad calls Liverpool MUST be at the top of the list!
Their greatest accomplishment of the last decade was their Champions League win which was only made possible by questionable calls by Refs in crucial games.

How can anybody comment on diving from the scouser vs mighty Blues match from sunday...without talking about Torres. who had about 2-3 brutal dives...all of which went unpunished. Liverpool is the best bunch of babies out there. both teams were at the ref all game... they didnt complain when the no- goal was allowed by Luis Garcia in the Champions league 2 seasons ago...Karma has a way of working. scouser wont finish higher than 5th with the jokes they have in their squad. Jose is AMAZING

i'm not at all surprised to hear a bunch of Chelski's defending the Goof Troop .. club support runs deep and we all turn a blind eye to bad calls when it goes in our favour ..anyone who has seen it would have to admit it was a shocker & Rob made an absolute blunder .. even the commentators for ChelseaTV said so ..

You want to punch him in the face?
God, You are an idiot!
Of course he is gonna agree with the call, what would you say in his shoes? Yet, you do not want to upset the higher board of directors(which are responsible for deciding if you should keep your job or not).
And ya so what, a bad call was made. "It happens" in every sport...
Bret Hull's foot in the crease of the Stanley Cup finals, Argentina's hand of God, and many more.
Sorry if you are a Liverpool supporter. That is if you even watch soccer and considered a true fan, (not some Toronto F.C. bandwaggon jumper that all of a sudden "knows" soccer).
All in all im just trying to say people gotta get punches and roll with 'em sometimes. Your not always gonna get the right call, but always back your team. Remember they are the reason you make millions, right?
Hey dont you write things to keep or bosses happy?

There's no question that the Penalty Kick shouldn't have been awarded. It was pretty obvious that it was mistake when even the Chelsea players kept their mouths shut and weren't appealing for a penalty.
But to jump all over Jose Mourinho is a little much. I mean, I can understand why some fans hate the guy... he does have an arrogant attitude to him but it's all for show. Mourinho is a perfectionist and will do anything he can to get the slightest advantage over his opposition. If it means using his words to get inside the minds of other teams or to even momentarily distract them from their preparations for Chelsea... then he's doing his job.
Jose Mourinho led an FC Porto team to a UEFA Cup and Champions League title at a time when Portuguese teams had struggled to see any sort of success in Europe. He's also done very well during his stay in Chelsea... he really is a genius and one of the best coaches in the world.
I know some of you will cut him down because of the finances available to Chelsea and the players they have... but I just ask you to look at Real Madrid and tell me why they weren't going around winning everything in sight. It all comes down to coaching and like him or hate him, Jose Mourinho is the man.
FORCA!

Dear John Molinaro,
After reading what passes for an article on the CBC, I couldn't stop laughing...you obviously know little or nothing about football. I'm not a Chelsea fan, nor do I care for Liverpool, but your opinion is naive, simple, and not worth the time of most football fans. Stick to hockey.
As for Steven Gerrad, he is the biggest whinner in the league. He was gifted a free kick that lead to Liverpool's win not one week ago, and yet when the call doesn't go his way, he demands an apology!
Laughable, kind of like this article.

" I want to punch Jose Mourinho in the face " and the CBC still lets you wrte for them??? Let's go back to Liverpool's first game of last against Sheffield United ( who I believe were relegated by a couple of points..) Liverpool tied that game very late on a ...... penalty shot...... after a dive by Steven Gerrard....
Mourinho breeds success, what he did with Porto in 2004 with a 25 million euro budget speaks for itself. Is he smug, yes, because he can be!!He instills a belief in his players and is constantly taking the pressure off his players by making calculated "smug" comments to the media. I too hope he will coach Portugal very soon as with his mind and Portugal's talent pool should make an excellent combonation. His players love him as John Terry admitted that he is the player he is today because of Mourinho, he even gave Mourinho his first Jersey as England captain in the last World Cup. Too much to say about Mourinho.... John Molinaro, you should watch more futebol matches then just the Marquis match on the score.

I think Jose M. from the USA said it best, I really wish CBC would stop letting this guy write ridiculous articles about a sport in a league which he evidently knows little about. His opening line truly shows the type of maturity you want in a writer(that was sarcasism CBC).
While most articles are writtem with a slight opinion based slant, sports is one area where a writer should stick to the facts and if CBC wishes to continue to have John Molinaro sefve as their futebol(soccor) expert, maybe he should starting writing articles that are worthwhile and factual....and John, leave the personal feeling opening lines at home.

I for one have also not agreed with alot of what John has wrote in the past and he clearly has a Italian bias/inferiority complex....but I digress.
I think alot of people missed the point of John's article that it is a blog which is supposed to be opinion based, not fact based. We can all disagree with his opinion, but his articles are supposed to be opinion based.
Secondly, John only made a comment about Jose's behaviour. Why are people making comments about penalties and who is lucky etc.? Any objective person would come to the conclusion that Jose is a great manager, who is arrogant, incapable of complement to a competitor, and always has a excuse for losing other than the other team played better. All he had to say was, 'we had a little bit of luck on our side today' or ' we were fortunate to get a goal'
Lastly a question...Why with all of their talent do chelsea play such a negative brand of football?

you are new to sports aren't you? ever heard all other managers defend their team even if obviously ridiculous ? right you are, only Mourinho ever does it! could you possibly be a racist, no of course you are not!
try being objective and listen to other managers talk about their games, you will be surprised!

Come on let's focus in canadian soccer which is laying flat on the floor without a professional league and with all the soccer assotiations run by fans/politians...that's what matters and is happening right now. Mourinho is a great coach and he knows how to get the best out of his players.Instead of being critizing him we should be learning and building our on leagues and teams. That way we and they talk about us CANADA.

I can't believe that I'm defending Molinaro, but he of course has a point, albeit perhaps in not quite the way he puts it. Mourinho is a great manager, but he's also an arrogant jerk.
Every manager has to protect his team, and he does that well, but there's no reason why he couldn't say "things happen in football and maybe we made our own luck today, but I can see why they are upset". The whole thing about his naive team is really insulting in its baldfaced audacity. With Mourinho it often goes beyond protecting the team to juvenile name-calling.
I don't really support any EPL team, but there's no reason why you can't neutrally say Mourinho's a great manager who also goes past what he has to because he's a jerk.
