Dispelling World Cup Hangover

Soccer became Canada's sport for one month, whether the hockey fans liked it or not. Though I still got NHL draft updates (especially surrounding Halak) in the middle of the games it was soccer in the morning and then soccer at night as the games of the day were replayed. I even watched the replays sometimes as during the day I was often observing and talking to the fans more than paying attention to the game!

While the excitement of an overdose of soccer begins to dim many of the fans in Montreal are already missing national coverage of their favourite game. Now they will have to go back to making an extra effort to follow their teams on the internet or other channels that sometimes cost a little extra.

At least in Montreal there is plenty of excitement to be had and to distract oneself until withdrawal symptoms fade. The International Fireworks competition every Saturday night is perfect for something new to watch. Warning: some colour combinations of the fireworks may trigger memories of flags or jerseys from the World Cup!

For more tastes of Africa there is the Festival International Nuits D'Afrique that has cultural activities and lots of wonderful music - minus the vuvuzelas!

You can still taste different cultures outside bars packed with fans at the last weekend of Les Weekends du Monde at Parc Jean Drapeau or at the Dragon Boat Race later this month.

For general craziness there is always Piknic Electronik on Sundays, the International Festival of Circus Arts, the Fantasia Film Festival and Just for Laughs! Any and all of those will help you dispel your soccer blues.

I may need to take my own advice as I keep watching my video montage and reliving the month! Good luck!
