Vela injured his right hamstring and was replaced 31 minutes into Thursday's game against France, which Mexico won 2-0 in Polokwane, South Africa.
Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said "we still have to wait for the confirmation from the doctor with a more detailed examination, but from what he says it's a muscle injury."
Aguirre said he will "have to change the lineup … two players who started today won't be there.
Efrain Juarez is ruled out after picking up a second yellow card.
