FRANKFURT, GERMANY: Scarily ridiculous costumes and drunken fans aside, last night's final game of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup left me shaking - literally.

Between the flashing lights of cameras, and non-stop cheering, drums, and singing, the atmosphere was charged with adrenaline. The intensity of the game shot up in the opening moments, as each team stepped up to sing their national anthem.

Both countries were playing for national pride, but for Japan, which has faced one disaster after another - earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster - it was about more. It was about doing everything possible to give their nation a little good news, something to smile about. I must admit I got a little teary-eyed.

During the game, the fans flip-flopped with their support. Goalie wasting time? Jeers. Beautiful play? Cheers.

There were times where the stands were filled with American optimism, the attitude which has fed the American team throughout the qualification rounds.

"USA, USA, USA," the fans screeched, their faces smeared with paint and expectation.

After 22-year-old Alex Morgan's goal, everyone was on their feet. Many people didn't sit down for the remainder of the game. It actually dented the impact of the Mexican waves humming through the stadium, over and over.

But Japan never gave up. And after each beautiful possession, "relying on precise passing patterns to paper-cut [their opponents] to death", it was hard not to be won over, especially by Homare Sawa, who after 18 years playing of for her country, is getting better and better.

"Schoen, Schoen," (beautiful, beautiful) the German fans behind me cheered every time Sawa got the ball.

The cheer "Nippon, Nippon, Nippon..." permeated the stadium, slowly, magically, accompanied by a base drum and a haunting oriental flute. It reminded me of an old Western movie, forewarning more action, more drama.

There was more drama all right.

From Carli Lloyd's Baggio to three saved penalties by Hope Solo and Ayumi Kaihori, it wasn't clear who was going to take it till the very end.

When it went to Japan [and I'll admit I was rooting for them], the stands were bathed in euphoria. Glitter and golden streamers shone down on every corner. Then there were the fireworks and the disco balls, which transformed the entire stadium into a party.
It was my first World Cup final in a stadium, and I couldn't help but get wrapped up in the moment. I took out my computer to write down my final thoughts, but as the Pink anthem "Raise your glass," poured out of the stadium's speakers, my whole body started to shake. I struggled to hit the right keys.

It was the perfect ending to the most successful Women's World Cup in history. Another action-packed and exciting game that exhibited the best of women's football - technique, physicality, heart and team spirit.

"We gave the crowd a good game today - so it will be a final to remember," U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said after the game. The tournament as a whole has "been phenomenal, even though we didn't win the gold."

"So happy for Japan," Canadian player Christine Sinclair Tweeted. "When [you] beat Germany, Sweden and USA in 1 tourny, I'd say [you] deserve the title."

Ramblings

It's been a treat writing about the Women's game over the last month. I've had the opportunity to learn a little more about the women's game, Germany and my stepsister (Canadian player Rhian Wilkinson)'s world. Thank you for tuning into my random travel adventures, discussions about sex and soccer, and quest to understand the German psyche, among others.

I was impressed by the traditional powerhouses of the game - Sweden and the USA, in particular - with their direct but effective soccer. Cross to Abby Wambach, Header, Score. You can't knock it if it works. But I guess what really struck me at this tournament was the possession ball being played by the up-an-coming teams like France and Japan - the women's game has never been more beautiful to watch.

When I think about the memorable moments of the Women's World Cup, I'm often taken all the way back to 1999, when USA was in shootouts for the title against China.

When Brandi Chastain scored that final penalty kick and ripped off her shirt, there were over 90,000 people in the stands and millions more watching the moment at home and later on youtube.

This year's World Cup can't be epitomized by a moment. And that's a good thing. The highlight reel of the tournament is full of picture-perfect plays and beautiful goals.
It's not surprising then that 'everyone' was watching and tweeting about the final game - from President Obama to a bunch of my friends across the African continent (many of whom I don't think have ever seen a women's game).

"Stunning ball skills; what a great show," said Bo, who was watching the game from Cameroon.

"I even watched the extra time instead of watching Brazil-Paraguay [the men's Copa América game]," said Christian, who was watching the game in Accra, Ghana.

"This is a-m-a-ziing!!!!," my friend Wuwa from Austria added.

Visibility of the game

The Women's World Cup was given so much air time this year (it was broadcast in over 200 countries and was being streamed online by people around the globe) that audiences got to know and appreciate not just the top players like Marta and Abby Wambach, but Homare Sawa, the Brazilians Christiane and Fabiana, Anonman from Equatorial Guinea, the list goes on and on.

It's good for the players: more visibility means more marketing potential for the women's game, which means more female players will be able to command workable salaries by playing professionally.

But it's also good for the development of the game from a grassroots level. There wasn't even a Women's World Cup when I was a girl. I think I was in my early teens when I first realized Canada had a women's team. I didn't see our national team on television or in the stadium, but rather at our local patchy turf in suburban Montreal. I was pointed in the direction of Charmaine Hooper after the game, and I remember asking for her autograph.

After that encounter, however brief, there was a fundamental shift in the part that soccer played in my life. It went from pastime to full-time. I couldn't get enough.

As more young players have connections to the women's game (either on the field or on TV), at least some of them will aspire to more. Not only will they want to play soccer as a pastime, they will strive to play for their region, their province, their country - and in four years time at the next World Cup in Canada.

The next World Cup will extend knowledge of the sport even more, at home and abroad. As host nation, games will be coming to cities across Canada. And internationally, eight more countries will be taking part. The next tournament will host 24 rather than 16 teams in the group round. The men's World Cup currently has 32 teams in the group round.

Of course the additional teams may "drop the standard of play a little bit," but it's important for the development of the sport and several regions such as Europe, Asia, South America and Africa already have "great depth."

More people participating, means more people watching the sport - more people that get to enjoy the awesomeness that has become women's soccer.

Tactically sound. Technically brilliant. Dogged and determined.

All of these aptly describe the Japanese team following its stunning and dramatic penalty shootout victory over the United States in Sunday's Women's World Cup final from Frankfurt, Germany.

Here's one more adjective: classy.

Japan won plaudits for its superb displays in Germany. From their efficient counter-attack, sublime passing skills, expert possession and fearlessness, the Japanese were the class of the tournament when it came to the action on the field.

That Homare Sawa, the Japanese veteran who was competing in her fifth - and possibly final - World Cup won the Golden Ball (tournament MVP) and Golden Show (top scorer) was more than fitting.

Sawa exuded the very best qualities of the Japanese team, showing perseverance and great resolve during the competition. Aside from netting a hat-trick in a group-stage game against Mexico, she also set up the winner in Japan's extra-time victory over Germany in the quarter-finals.

After finding the back of the net against Sweden in the semifinals, Sawa saved her best performance for last.

It was her goal in the 117th minute that rescued Japan in the final against the Americans. And while some players have a tendency not to volunteer for duty in a penalty shootout, Sawa quickly raised her hand.

That's quality leadership, folks.

Lest you think Sawa carried Japan on her broad shoulders, think again. This was a team effort, with key contributions from many.

Goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori made some outstanding saves throughout the tournament, none any more important than when she thwarted Shannon Boxx in the Americans' first attempt in the penalty shootout.

Midfielder Nahomi Kawasumi was limited to two appearances as a substitute (totalling 29 minutes) before she scored a pair of goals (including the winner) in Japan's 3-1 victory over Sweden in the semifinals.

But what was most impressive about the Japanese was how they carried themselves with great dignity and class every step of the way at this tournament, playing for the folks back home who are still dealing with aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country in March.

After every match the players went to the middle of the pitch and displayed a banner reading "To Our Friends Around the World -- Thank You for Your Support."

Their heroism did not go unnoticed. On the surface soccer may just be game, but try telling that to the millions of Japanese who woke up at 3:45 a.m. just to watch their heroes take on the U.S. in Frankfurt.

Sawa and her teammates drew inspiration from the tenacity of regular Japanese citizens who are still trying to rebuild, while the Japanese team's journey to the final galvanized a nation and provided its people with some emotional relief.

It really is "the beautiful game."

It is now part of history. The 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup is over for winners, losers and spectators alike. There was incredible drama, great goals, embarrassing mistakes and some wonderful memories.

The final itself between the U.S. and Japan could hardly have had more twist and turns. The Americans dominated the early stages and were twice rewarded only to have the trophy snatched away at the death. FIFA couldn't have wished for a more fitting climax in its quest to make the women's game something we value and await with eager anticipation.

But for a sport so globally dominated by men, what did we learn about the women's game at its highest level? Here is a selection of my impressions. Please feel free to add yours.

1. Women's soccer has come a long way

Make no mistake - the women's game has come on leaps and bounds. The days of kick and rush are long gone. Today's players are not only highly tuned athletes; they are skilled performers who have learned the art of incisive decision making whether on the ball or supporting the play.

The technical ability of just about every team in Germany was a joy to behold. It is all very well for a coach to decide the team is going to play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2. He or she must have the players capable of understanding and executing the plan.

Even the emerging nations, such as Colombia and Equatorial Guinea, were comfortable in possession and able to quickly turn defence into attack. Inevitably their inexperience was exposed by stronger teams but nobody can argue women's football lacks pattern or flow.

2. Canada has a long way to go

Where do we start? In four short years Canada will host the tournament and the work to right the wrongs of Germany cannot begin quickly enough. The Canadians were the first team to be eliminated from a competition in which we thought they would revel.

If Canada needed a wakeup call, it got one in the loudest and rudest fashion imaginable. Let's not make excuses about broken noses and groups of death. Let's accept Canada is not good enough and has a mountain of work ahead to avoid embarrassing itself on home soil.

Canada must learn from those who excelled. The Japanese, the Americans and the French all pushed the program forward and were rewarded. 2011 amounted to one thing - Canada's worst-ever showing at a Women's World Cup. This can never be allowed to happen again.

3. Women's soccer is competitive and fair

Where were the divers, the simulators and the time wasters? Happily they were almost invisible. I hesitate to use the word naivety, but there was a refreshing honesty about the players' collective work ethic. It was a highly competitive tournament, almost devoid of gamesmanship.

Marta is the world's best player. Her individual skill is on another level to just about every other female player on the planet. Sadly, on occasion, she allowed the cynicism of the men's game to influence her performance and the critics couldn't wait to pounce.

She was not the only culprit, but the World Player of the Year is there to be shot at. Marta must use her stature and incredible ability to elevate the profile of the women's game, not to draw unhealthy comparisons with her male counterparts.

4. Goalkeeping needs to be improved

This is an area which needs serious attention. I lost count of the number of goalkeeping howlers which punctuated the competition. With the possible exception of American Hope Solo, just about every keeper in Germany had something to answer for.

First - the obvious. The majority of women goalkeepers are physically smaller than their male counterparts but are nonetheless expected to defend a goal which is still eight feet high and 24 feet wide. Let's not even think about getting into a debate about reducing the dimensions.

Ball handling, distribution and decision making are all in need of a serious upgrade. Too many keepers came for crosses and corners they were never going to get to. Many more invited unnecessary pressure with poor choices or execution of clearance.

5. Women's soccer has a healthy future

The growth of the women's game is assured. For some it will never hold the appeal of its male equivalent but the Women's World Cup is a legitimate competition which demands and deserves our interest, support and attention.

There's no right or wrong way to succeed. The power play of the Americans, the swarming application of the Japanese and the elegance of the rapidly improving French were showcased in a tournament which drew healthy crowds and attracted millions of armchair fans.

Canada 2015 has a lot to live up to. The expanded Women's World Cup will involve 24 nations playing at six venues across the country. There are stadiums to build, players to emerge and fans to engage. It is a World Cup - it needs to be a world class event.

We've talked plenty during the course of this FIFA Women's World Cup about parity, about the overall improvement in the women's game, and about the overall quality of the goals.

We've talked plenty during the course of this FIFA Women's World Cup about parity, about the overall improvement in the women's game, and about the overall quality of the goals.

The third place match between France and Sweden on Saturday served as a microcosm of all the above.

There was a time when Sweden would have smashed France. As recently as the last World Cup there were an 11-0 game and a 7-2 final score. You could easily have seen France on the end of one of those score-lines in Germany - except the French had only even made the World Cup once before.

Those days of lopsided scores seem to be a thing of the past. There is no question that parity has arrived in the women's game.

The only fly in that ointment, however, could be that FIFA has chosen the next event, which happens to take place in Canada, as the first Women's World Cup to expand from 16 to 24 teams. Here's hoping that the road to parity will continue at a rapid pace so that the trend of evenly matched contests can continue.

And the quality of play overall has drastically improved.

By and large the games have been entertaining and played at a much higher pace than ever before. The third place match was a perfect example. French flair and individual talent with the ball was matched by the Swedes' athletic ability and overall teamwork.

Then there are the goals.

We've argued constantly over which goals belong on the top ten list and which goals don't make the grade. It's not an easy task. The winner in the third place match by Sweden's Marie Hammarstrom certainly belongs at or near the top. But which goal do you knock down peg? There have been that many good ones.

As for the match itself, France must feel frustrated. They played well once again, but could not find the finishing touch when they needed it the most. But they get my vote as the most improved team in the tournament. They're likely the most improved team anywhere on the planet. If they can find themselves a top notch goalkeeper, they'll be tough to beat.

All in all, this has been a competition to remember. Perhaps it will be re-called as the year women's football went mainstream. This wasn't just a women's soccer event. This was a true World Cup.

During every Women's World Cup game over the last three weeks, the stadiums have been painted with German patriotism: leis, bunny ears, capes, face paint, noisemakers and oh, yes - cowboy hats - everything in black, red and gold.

We don't think much of such displays in Canada. Two weeks ago on Canada Day, our country was awash with red and white, and year-round flags top stores, buildings and homes.

We take our patriotism abroad, too. Travelling Europe or Asia, it's hard not to run into Canadian travellers, their backpacks adorned with a dainty maple leaf (although arguably in that context, the crest is often less a celebration of Canada, and more an attempt to separate us from our southern neighbours).

Still the line: "I'm from Canada," is almost always met with smiles, and an affirmation that: "all Canadians are really nice."

Most Germans I know didn't grow up swathed in their national colours, or hoisting their flag atop their house. When my German friend Annette was travelling through Australia after university, some of her compatriots would say: "we are from Europe."

Even now Annette told me she's not quite comfortable with national pride: "I'm glad that I grew up in Germany, but I'm not 'proud' to be German," she told me.

Part of this has to do with the outside perception of Germans - organized, punctual, reliable, and "not very cool," Annette pointed out.

But more broadly, the lack of flag-waving has to do with the fact that over 65 years later, Germany is still living with the legacy of the Third Reich.

Feelings about the phrase "Ich bin stolz, Deutscher zu sein (I'm proud to be German)," have been polarized to such an extent that neo-Nazis adopted the phrase as a slogan for their political campaign a few years ago. And when the former general secretary of the Christian Democrats used the phrase in an interview, he was accused of 'having the mentality of a skinhead'.

With so much sub-text, and where 'nationalism' still has a haunting echo, it's understandable that Germany has struggled to find an acceptable face for its patriotism. So flag-waving and nonchalant national pride have always been difficult.

A new "Wave"

That all changed in 2006, when the World Cup came to Germany and provided the national psyche with a much-needed catharsis. More than score lines and statistics, the competition gave Germans a chance to experience what so many other countries take for granted: guilt-free nationalism.

When super fans from around the world arrived in Germany with their flags and t-shirts in tow, Germany responded with its own national train of support. A million German jerseys were sold that year, compared to 250,000 during the previous World Cup.

But I think it's deeper than that. Last year before the World Cup in South Africa, I described how the Ivory Coast team was instrumental in bringing their country out of civil war in 2005/2006. The healing power of soccer spans across countries and across the world; when national players step out on to the field, the entire nation steps out with them. And if the team wins, the country wins by extension. Soccer has this amazing ability to create a sense of national unity and identity beyond religious, ethnic and political divides.

Of course soccer is not a cure-all for national malaise) but in 2006, the success of the German team, and the World Cup in general, gave Germans - from East and West and from various cultural backgrounds - a reason to celebrate together. At the time Der Spiegel noted: "it's like being in a different country with Mediterranean cheerfulness and uninhibited open-minded patriotism. . . a country under a black-red-and-gold blanket."

Passing the flag

Though the 2006 World Cup ended, and the flags were put away, Germans have remained with a refreshed sense of patriotism, Norman Eiselt, a bank agent from Kaarst, told me during the U.S.-France semifinal game a few days ago. Whenever there's a big carnival, gay pride parade, Eurovision contest or soccer tournament, the flags are unfurled once again.

Viktoria Zeng, was sporting black-red and gold bunny ears when I met her a few days ago.

"Now we can support our national team," she told me, with a smile. "It's about being patriotic, which has nothing to do with the Nazis."

She added, though, that the Women's World Cup doesn't have enough clout on its own to have started the patriotic trend.

"All this wouldn't have happened before 2006," she said. "The Men's Cup was the first time people didn't have a second thought about the flag and it's been this way ever since."

Ich liebe Deutschland

There's a lot to be patriotic about in Germany these days. The country is Europe's economic powerhouse, and a leading exporter of machinery, vehicles and chemicals (OK, much of this is arms - Germany's the world's third biggest exporter of arms).

But the country is also a global leader in terms of wind power capacity, after China and the United States, and the country hopes to phase out all its nuclear plants by 2022. Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, though she has been labelled indecisive, is still one of the most effective leaders in Europe, and even Pope Benedict XVI is a German. Picture-perfect World Cups in 2006 and again in 2011 are two more things on the growing list.

There's even a new show on television called "Ich liebe Deutschland:" (I love Germany). It's a comedy packed with washed-up celebrities, and with an audience dressed in German soccer fan attire - leis and all. Although it's just a comedy, I'm not sure this type of program would have been possible before Germany's World Cup successes.

Still deep-seated problems

Although the success of Germany's multiethnic soccer teams have helped the country (OK Germany didn't do well this year, but they are still a powerhouse in the women's game), race issues still run deep. Polls suggest that a majority of people in Germany think that immigrants (and particularly Muslims) are a burden on the economy. And Chancellor Merkel got a lot of flack from the Muslim community for presenting a prize to a Danish cartoonist who depicted the Prophet Mohammad with a bomb-shaped turban.

During last year's World Cup in South Africa, people questioned why foreign-born players on Germany's team still don't sing the national anthem. Although it's possible that some players don't know the words (I'm told it's not taught in all schools), the press postulated it might be because of patriotic ambivalence. Currently the third stanza of the "Song of the Germans" is sung pre-match, but under the Nazis, the first stanza, which begins, "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" - "Germany, Germany above all" - was the official anthem.

Social scientists such as Wilhelm Heitmeyer and his colleagues, have also warned that the idea that World Cups produce a "tolerant patriotism" is "dangerous nonsense, a bit of brainwashing." The authors warn that mass media in identity and patriotism campaigns" should be discouraged.

Moving up and moving on

There are the reminders of Germany's "history" around every corner. In Berlin, some of the old buildings are still pierced with gunshot holes and there are thousands of "stolpersteine" or stumbling stones across the country commemorating the Jews, gays, resistance fighters and Gypsies whose lives were taken during the war. From the recovering cities of Frankfurt and Dresden, to the bleak skeletons of concentration camps that dot the countryside, I don't know if Germans could ever forget the past.

But it's getting easier to forgive themselves through sport, as demonstrated again this year through the Women's World Cup. The support for Germany started strong at the opening game, and has continued to the final, despite the home team's early exit. At today's final, people young and old alike are rocking the country's national jersey and colours.

"We are disappointed in the [German] team's performance," 16-year-old Milana Holtschuffe told me in the stadium.

"But we are still proud," she said.

With the FIFA Women's World Cup coming to a close, it is time to look ahead to Sunday's final between the United States and Japan.

This could be the best game of women's football - ever.

If the technically superb Japan can get the best of the United States - the proverbial juggernaut of the women's game - it will be a storyline fit for Hollywood.

With their country ravaged by natural disaster, the Japanese came into this tournament and captured the hearts of fans around the world. They have produced a string of sparkling performances; controlled, technical, tactically bright, every one of their players comfortable with the ball at her feet.

It is a joy to watch.

The United States, on the other hand, has turned themselves around 180 degrees.

They got off to a slow start in the opening 45 minutes of the first group game against North Korea, and could easily have been down more than one goal. They came alive in the second half, though, and eventually went on to win 2-0.

Victory over Colombia was followed by a surprising defeat to Sweden. Hardly the stuff of a team ranked number one in the world, many expected Brazil to triumph over the United States in the quarter-finals.

But that's when the United States showed that it has what it takes to win it all.

Down 2-1 to the Brazilians deep into extra time, Abby Wambach scored a towering header to send the game into penalty kicks. And you know what happened next.

In the semi-finals against France, the United States were second best in the opening half. Head coach Pia Sundhage made some tactical adjustments, and that, combined with some dreadful goalkeeping on the part of the French, saw the U.S. run out comfortable winners.

So who is going to win the final?

My heart says Japan.

A part of me really wants to see them triumph, in large part to reward them for their commitment to playing the game the way it was supposed to be played; pass and move for each other, moving as one both in attack and defence.

Unfortunately, my head says that the United States will get the better of Japan.

While the Japanese players are technically superior, the U.S. has an incredible will to win. They simply do not stay down. They pick themselves up and keep fighting, right to the very end.

And that, I feel, is going to be the difference on Sunday. The United States will do whatever it takes to win. Japan will play beautiful football, but the United States will go home as champions.

Today I stepped into the car for my last drive across Germany, to Frankfurt for Sunday's final game - the United States versus Japan. My odometer now reads nearly 2500 kilometres, the footprint of three weeks of World Cupping.

It's been a fantastic ride. Besides a short conference a couple of years ago, I'd never spent any appreciable time in Germany. And now I've seen parts of the country I never thought I would, and of course some parts I wish I hadn't.

I was impressed by the diversity in Berlin. The streets of Kreuzberg are like the frontline of German multiculturalism, where doner shops and currywurst stands are equally ubiquitous, and where women in hijabs blend with hipsters in thick-rimmed glasses and Converse sneakers.

The old town (Altstadt) of Dusseldorf has its own unique mix of old and new. In the shadows of ancient castles, Germans and tourists alike consume one-too-many locally-brewed Altbiers, before joining in late-night push-up competitions.

Dresden is, well, absolutely gorgeous. It's incredible to think a city so badly razed during World War II could have been so carefully restored and rebuilt to its former baroque beauty. Reuters estimates around 1.6 trillion Euros have been spent rebuilding East Germany and it shows.

Of course in-between, I've been to countess mediocre roadside villages boasting plain cheese sandwiches, pay-to-pee toilets and gambling machines like "Fruitinator and "Rawhide."

Despite the perpetually miserable weather over the last three weeks, the German landscape is quite simply stunning. The rolling fields of potatoes, wheat and rye are like patches on a ruffled quilt sown together with ribbons of greenery. The green, brown and gold are interrupted only by clusters of red-roofed cottages and the occasional derelict castle.

The countryside is peppered with wind turbines that slap slowly and metrically through the fog. There are actually more than 21,000 wind turbines across the country, and they provide Germany with seven per cent of its electrical power. Wind power in the country is set to expand in the future, as Germany tries to phase out its nuclear power plants. Canada should take pointers.

I opted to travel by car rather than train upon the advice of a friend (among other reasons). She told me that by choosing to drive in the region one "can say Autobahn as much as possible and make stops at towns like F_cking Austria."

Heeding to her advice, I found myself an 'economy' Renault and a navigational device, and I was ready to go.

"Autobahhhhnnnnn," I said under my breath as I got into the car, feeling the aspiration, heavy and warm in my mouth.

I pride myself on being a Montreal driver. After all, Montreal is probably the only city in Canada, where breaking speed limits, dodgy manoeuvres and using at least one expletive, is required to get a license.

But despite this impeccable training, I wasn't prepared for the Autobahn. Even at 140 kilometres per hour, I was going only half the speed of my fellow Autobahners. A shockwave passed through my mini Renault every time I was overtaken. I had to granny drive (with my hands at 10 and 2) to prevent from losing control.

It finally made sense to me why Germans listen to so much house music and metal. Cruising down the highway at those speeds, nothing else seems appropriate.

Another thing about the Autobahns - it's a rumour that there are no speed limits. Absolute myth. Though there are sections that encourage "free" driving, they are interrupted frequently and abruptly by red-ringed signs for 80 or even 60 kilometres per hour (due to road work). Without slamming on the breaks, I don't know how anyone evades radar mug shots. I'm not looking forward to the mail over the next couple of weeks, lest I get receive a stack of driving infractions.

Seeing the world one hiccup at a time

I'm the type of traveller that buys the guidebook, but never remembers to open it. I rarely, if ever, have a plan B, and so I have to "wing it" a lot.

On one hand it means I seldom have expectations, and so when I'm driving to an interview and the street opens into an old cobblestone square, baroque buildings and murals made of porcelain tiles [like Dresden's old town], I'm overcome by the beauty.

On the other hand, my lack of "planning" also means I'm often discombobulated, often lost and often in trouble. My inability to communicate in German (beyond ordering food) just made matters worse.

The 'trouble' started the night I arrived; I drove around for hours in the pouring rain in Berlin, with no concept of where my hotel was, after my navigational device failed. It continued until my last day in Dusseldorf, where I got lost for a good couple of hours while jogging through a park (OK, more specifically - a massive cemetery). So glad I didn't go at night.

My epic 'miss' was trying to visit the town of Erfurt for a lunch break during a six-hour drive from Dresden to Dusseldorf. Erfurt is a "not-to-be-missed medieval town," and home to the oldest standing synagogue in Europe, I was told.

Somehow I got distracted and ended up in a pedestrian area. A sea of Russian and Asian tourists had to part frantically around my vehicle. I kept my eyes forward as I weaved in and out of the masses, aware of the stares of disbelief from all directions. My cheeks were burning red, if that's even possible for a brown person.

Well, to my good fortune, that pedestrian walkway turned into a tram platform. Definitely not a place for cars, it turns out. The railed trams were swinging in to the station from every which way. There was nothing I could do but wait. In a line of trams. On a platform.

I spend most of my time in Nairobi, a place where slight traffic infractions lead to threats of jail time or considerable bribes to police officers. I honestly didn't know what the German police would have done if they found me there. Laughed at my sheer incompetence?

Needless to say I didn't stick around long. A quick re-program of my navigational device, and I was out of there. I can always find pictures of Erfurt and its old synagogue on the Internet.

Now grounded in Frankfurt, my final destination, and having already evaded a parking ticket this afternoon, I think I'll take the train to Sunday's game.

Japan and the United States are more than worthy
finalists for the FIFA Women's World Cup.

The Japanese and Americans overcame loses in the opening round and
finishing second in their respective groups, not to mention defeating difficult
opponents in the quarter- and semifinals, to book their spots in Sunday's
finale in Frankfurt.

So, full credit to them both.

However, the Americans' victory over France Wednesday not
only relegated Les Bleues to the third-place match, it also deprived fans of
the beautiful game from watching Louisa Necib, this tournament's best player, from competing on the big stage.

A quick look at the statistics show Marta's
Brazil and Homare Sawa of Japan tied for first in the scoring race with four
goals apiece. Lisa Dahlkvist and her three goals paved the way for Sweden to
reach the semifinals, while Abby Wambach's late heroics in the U.S.'s last two
games is the main reason why the Americans will have a chance to claim a third World
Cup title.

Necib's name doesn't appear anywhere on the tournament's
list of goal scorers, but statistics aren't always an accurate reflection of a
player's influence, and the Frenchwoman's influence at the World Cup has been
immense.

Dubbed by the French media as the female Zinedine Zidane, Necib was largely responsible
for France making it the semifinals in the first place. Her artful displays on
the field and the way she pulled the creative strings in the French attack won
her plaudits from opponents and neutral observers alike.

FIFA really should
come up with statistical categories to measure elegant possession, sublime
passing skills, and a cultured touch on the ball. Necib possesses all three of
those traits in abundance and it would be nice if she received the proper
accolades and recognition for her superb displays in Germany.

There is also a marked intelligence to her play. Necib has
a great football IQ, knowing when to take a defender on one-on-one, how to find
a teammate with a slide-rule pass, and how to exploit tight spaces to create
scoring chances for herself and her cohorts.

All of this is bound in a modest package - despite being
heralded as her team's best player, Necib cuts a quiet and shy figure off the
field, and is almost embarrassed to the point of being uncomfortable when
pressed to talk about herself in media interviews.

It's just a shame that she has been denied the chance to
showcase her considerable skills on the grandest platform in the women's game.

But at just 24 years of age, and with France an emerging
European power in the sport, Necib will be back in four years time when the
Women's World Cup is staged in Canada.

down the days.

Follow John F. Molinaro on Twitter at: http://twitter.com/#!/JohnMolinaro

In a way you could argue it's more surprising that the United States is through to the FIFA Women's World Cup final than Japan.

The Americans could easily have gone down to defeat against Brazil at the quarter-final stage, and they were definitely the second best team despite beating France in their semifinal match-up.

Make no mistake about it - France dominated a lethargic American team while outshooting them 25-11.

In fact it was hard to imagine France not winning that game. If they had a decent goalkeeper, they would have won. If Hope Solo and Berangere Sapowicz had swapped jerseys before kickoff, France would have won this game by several goals. The difference was that stunning, at least to me.

Even though they're finished, France looks to me like the team of the future. I've been more impressed by them than any other team in the competition. In retrospect, their demolition of Canada seems like the right result. They are one of the world's elite teams now. They just need a goalkeeper.

As for Japan, give them full credit. They were as good as Germany on the day in their quarter-finals and much better than Sweden in the semifinals. They've been well organized, they're technically sound, and they swarm the ball when they don't have it.

And so the final is set. It's hard to handicap. If the Americans don't play better, and Japan continues to do what they've been doing, I can see Japan winning it, unless the U.S.'s rub of the green continues. Yes, they have been lucky. I do think they'll play better though, and in the end I think they'll win.

One thing we know: for the first time in Women's World Cup history, we'll have a winner who did not finish first in their group.

Either way, this has been a terrific celebration of women's football. The quality of play is far superior to anything we've seen before. The gap in the competitiveness of the teams has narrowed considerably. And some of the goals have been marvelous.

Let's hope for more of the same on Sunday.

I couldn't help but laugh when I first saw Expert electronics' new television commercial. I was pulled in at first by the strobe lights, sweat and soccer moves. It was reminiscent of last year's "Write the Future" Nike campaign, and I anticipated "three minutes of awesome."

But in this commercial, when the play paused, it wasn't for cheeky tangential plotlines or social commentary, but rather so that Germany's loveliest - Fatmire Bajramaj, Kim Kulig, Simone Laudehr und Celia Okoyino da Mbabi - could fix their makeup.

"What this cliché-ridden advertisement has to do with electronics or the Women's World Cup is questionable," a recent Spiegel Online article pointed out. "But one thing is clear: the tournament... has finally broken into the top league of the advertising world."

Women's soccer has never been so centre stage - this year's Cup is being broadcast in over 200 countries, and here in Germany the tournament's drama has become a fixture in the media. The women's game has shown that it has selling power, and accordingly, advertisements featuring Germany's leading ladies pepper the streets, railways and commercial breaks. Insurance agencies, banks, mobile phone companies, the German postal corporation, Barbie and even sticker collectors have bought into the game.

Blame it on the Blatter

So why the new interest in women's soccer? Well the women's game has gotten more technical, faster, more enjoyable to watch. But advertising experts say the newfound interest in Europe could also be because of a tactical switch in the way the sport is being marketed.

"It's the new image of female footballers," said Daniela Schaaf, an expert on women's football at the German Sport University Cologne. "The players are now seen as sexy and that sexy image is pushed. They are no longer perceived as manly women."

Sepp Blatter, head of FIFA, drew the wrath of women around the world in 2004 when he suggested wearing skimpy clothing might help attract spectators to the women's game. "[Women] could, for example, have tighter shorts," he told the Guardian at the time. "Female players are pretty."

A lot of women went public with their disgust for the FIFA boss' remarks. "If I wanted to wear a bikini, I would have chosen to play beach volleyball," said Norwegian player Solveig Gulbrandsen at the time. Gulbrandsen's teammate, Lise Klaveness, added: "If the crowd only wants to come and watch models, then they should go and buy a copy of Playboy."

Well... now they can.

Five of Germany's junior players stripped off their kit for Playboy in June, and a couple weeks later the French team retaliated with a naked collection entitled "Is this how we should show up before you come to our games?" in the German newspaper Bild.

"With these photos, we want to disprove the cliché that all female footballers are butch," German midfielder Kristina Gessat told Playboy. "The message is: look, we are very normal - and lovely - girls!"

It's not the first time that sporting women (or athletes in general) have stripped down. WNBA star Diana Taurasi did the cover of ESPN's Body Issue last year and the English swim team did a creative nude shoot in the pool this March.

But this year's Women's World Cup adverts are a long way from the tough-as-guts advertisements of the last decade, where Mia Hamm sized up against Michael Jordan and admitted to her lack of baking skills.

This year the focus is on glamour - from clothing labels to hair products. It's not a coincidence the official motto of the 2011 FIFA World Cup is "The Beautiful Side of 2011."
A spokeswoman for the German insurance brand Allianz, one of the six major sponsors of the Cup, didn't hesitate to say: "a player's attractiveness is helpful for her and profitable for the business."

Countless blog sites have popped up this year ranking the "sexiest girls of the World Cup."

Clearly the new image of women's soccer is selling well.

"Soccer is a lesbian sport?"

Growing up in Canada, I don't think I ever really thought about the sexuality of my fellow soccer players. Talk of sexuality wasn't overt because it wasn't important.

But it's clear that the perception of women's soccer (and soccer players) is different around the world. I've already written about the situation in Africa, but even here in Germany, the women's game has different subtexts.

At the opening match - Germany versus Canada - a good 10% of the Berlin crowd was lesbian couples. I pinned the stats on the fact that Berlin is the gay capital of Europe and the game took place the day after Berlin's gay pride march.

But it's an explanation I've heard over and over in Germany as to why women's soccer isn't marketable. Number one is always: "it's slow," and number two is: "it's a lesbian sport."

"What makes it a lesbian sport?" I asked a group of young people on the U-Bahn on the way to the opening game. "Are there a lot of 'out' women on the German team?"

"Well if the majority of them are gay, then it's really only a coming out for the heterosexuals," Berliner Viktoria Zeng told me.

It's interesting because homosexuality in men's football is an absolutely taboo subject. Although "coming out" in the media or the art world is no longer really seen as detrimental to one's career, soccer in one of the "last bastions of traditional hegemony," according Birgit Bosold, who is running an exhibit on soccer and sexuality at the Schwules Museum in Berlin.

More simply put: "[Men's soccer] is a macho world, crowded with male stereotypes and dripping with beautiful women," former player Tony Cascarino wrote in the Sunday Times. "Any player who said he was gay would become an outsider," he added. "His earning potential would be reduced and he would be remorselessly abused from the terraces. But that would be mild compared with what would happen in the dressing-room, where there is no hiding place."

The first room of Boswold's soccer and sexuality exhibition in Berlin, is adorned with blow-up paintings of newspaper photographs of the German professional league. The work, by artist Katja Schneider, depicts top male players celebrating during games: a kiss on the forehead, a tight embrace.

Normally we wouldn't think anything of those types of images, but repainted in pastels, the paintings are almost homoerotic. The only reason why male teams can be so intimate on the field and in the dressing room is because it's presumed that the world of football is exclusively heterosexual, according to Boswold.

"Players would also be uneasy about hugging or kissing a gay player if he scored, in case people then associate them with being gay," Cascarino said.

Homophobia in the 'beautiful game'

Only a handful of men have 'come out' in the world of soccer. Former English player Justin Fashanu is the case everyone turns to - because it is the most dramatic, but also because there are so few other examples. Fashanu was the first black player to command a £1 million transfer fee, but his confidence was affected by the constant abuse from his teammates and management.

When Fashanu came out publicly in 1990, his former colleagues spoke out against him and his brother publicly disowned him. Eight years later, faced with a charge for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old (which he denied), Fashanu hung himself. In his suicide note he explained he didn't want to cause his family more embarrassment.

It's understandable then that so few men have followed suit, and been open about their sexuality. Former French player, Olivier Rouyer, and former German player Marcus Urban, both came out, but only after they retired from the game.

Anton Hysen, is the latest - coming out to Swedish gay magazine "Offside" this March. The reaction from the media has been positive, he told the BBC. But there's been little space for antagonism. Crowds are small for Hysen's fourth-tier team, and the razor-sharp locker room chat is stifled by the team's coach, Hysen's father.

All the same, Hysen has described receiving hate mail and Sweden's Channel Four had to retract an article on Hysen because of the backlash.

"Football may like to present itself now as a shiny bauble of high-tech boots, high-definition TV and billion-pound tournaments. But in some of its thinking, it remains mired in the days when food was rationed, toilets were outside, and homosexuality was illegal," wrote the BBC.

Back to the women

Considering the percentage of gay women in the soccer world, there are surprisingly few who are publicly 'out.' ). Norway's Isabell Herlovsen came out to a magazine before the Cup this year and Jessica Landström, came out to Swedish magazine QX in November 2008 ).

"It's up to each person to decide whether they want to be open with it or not," said Leni Kaurin, one of Norway's midfielders. Most of the players I've spoken with over the last couple of weeks have re-iterated this sentiment.

But some people, like Birgit Bosold (the project manager of the Soccer and Sex exhibition at the Schwules Museum), feel that sportswomen are in the media's eye and should - like actresses and politicians - be an example for the gay movement. "When I was young there were no women who were openly gay, and I had no mentors," she said.

The problem with women players coming out is less about team chemistry (the exception of course being some of the African teams, and more "about fears of potential lower market values...amoung a predominantly male heterosexual audience that the media and advertising address," according to Boswold.

Surveys of the advertising industry in Germany have shown that public persona and sex appeal are the most influential driving factors in marketing female soccer players. Of course sex appeal matters for men too - there are reasons why Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham are the best-paid players in terms of endorsements, but the less-attractive Messi, Rooney and Ronaldinho don't fall far behind.

Beauty is fleeting

The increased visibility of women's soccer in the media and advertising world can do nothing but help the sport. For the players, the endorsements provide a much-needed boost in earning potential. The average professional female soccer player in Germany still only makes around €2,000 and €4,000 per month, a fraction of the multi-million-euro contracts of their male counterparts.

But analysts worry that sexual marketing of the women's game won't last. Germany's most lucrative asset, Fatmire Bajramaj, for example, barely got any field time during this World Cup. She may be pretty and straight, but to sell the brands she represents, she needed to be on the field.

Considering the amount of capital for endorsements in women's soccer is still quite small, one could argue the money would be better spent supporting more promising (though potentially less-photogenic) players -- gay or straight, butch or girly.

I'm also not convinced that the game actually needs the "sexified image" to get support. Most people (at least in North America) were blown away by the Mia Hamm and Michael Jordan commercial. Not that Mia Hamm isn't hot - she is. But with well-respected sportspeople like Hamm and Jordan, Gatorade didn't need to use sex to promote its product.

I think the quarter-finals of this year's World Cup have proved once again there are more arresting qualities to the women's game than titillating photos. The last three games -- Japan vs. Germany, France vs. England and Brazil vs. USA - have proved wrong anyone who thought women's soccer boring or un-marketable, and the players didn't need to wear Sepp Blatter's "hotpants" to do it.
You've got to hand it to the Americans; they just never know when to give up.

A headed goal from Abby Wambach deep into stoppage time of the second half of extra time saw the 10-man United States come from behind to force penalty kicks in their quarter-final match with Brazil at the FIFA Women's World Cup on Sunday.

A Hope Solo save on Brazilian Daiane was the difference maker, as the Americans converted all five of their spot kicks to advance to the semi-finals on Wednesday, where they will face another stern test against the talented French side.

It would be a bold move to bet against the Americans, though.

After a number of dubious decisions by the referee, including the re-taking of Cristiane's saved penalty kick by Hope Solo in the second half - duly converted by Marta to bring Brazil level - it would have been easy for the United States to throw in the towel.

But their 'we're the best in the world because we're American' mentality saw them fight to the death. And despite playing a man down for the rest of the match after the red card to Rachel Buehler, that mentality was enough to see them through to the final four of the tournament.

If it is possible to dislike and admire a characteristic at the same time, that is how I feel about the Americans' confidence. Their cockiness and swagger, best exhibited by their goalkeeper Solo, can at times be very off-putting. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance, and at times it can disappear altogether when it comes to the Americans.
But that is also something I admire about them.

Both their male and female players go into games determined to prove that they are the best in the world, even if they are up against superior opposition. That confidence is infectious, and it has seen them pull off some amazing results over the years, including Sunday's comeback against Brazil.

Once Wambach pulled them level with Brazil, sending the quarter-final to penalty kicks, there was little doubt that the Americans felt the game was theirs. They managed to harness that confidence, and coolly dispatched all five of their penalty kicks.

And Hope Solo, possibly the most arrogant of the bunch, was the hero of the day.

At the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup, after Solo had been dropped for the Americans' semi-final match against Brazil - which the U.S. lost by a score of 4-0 - Solo launched a scathing attack on her coach, suggesting that she would have saved all four goals if she had been in the lineup.

Some would argue that every player would think the same thing in a similar situation - and they would be right. The difference is, Solo was actually crass enough to say it publicly.

So the pressure was most certainly on Solo when Sunday's game went to penalty kicks. Failure to triumph over Brazil would have brought her comments from the past back to haunt her once again.

But she stepped up and delivered when it most mattered, diving to her right to push away a weak penalty kick from Daiane, giving the Americans an advantage that they would not relinquish.

Two games now stand between the U.S. Women's team and the World Cup trophy. Despite being ranked number one in the world, they came into this tournament with serious question marks over their ability to go all the way, given their poor run of form leading up to the tournament.

After Sunday's victory over Brazil, it appears those question marks are beginning to fade.
Somehow they survived the big scare. Just when they thought they were out, Abby Wambach pulled them back in. The rest should be plain sailing for the United States.

Let's call a spade a spade. As Canadians we are, by and large, not huge fans of the Americans. Many are loud, brash and uncultured, and think they own the world. By the end of the week they may, once again, own the world of women's soccer.

Should they scale the podium again, they are to be congratulated. This was the team which scrambled through qualifying, failed to win the group in which it was seeded, and was within seconds of bowing out in the quarter-finals for the first time in its history.

In the final analysis, the U.S. finds a way to win. When the chips are down and all seems lost, the Americans dig a little deeper to uncover extra reserves of mental and physical strength. In the world of competitive sports, that ability is worth its weight in gold.

The titanic victory over Brazil only makes them stronger. It bolts down the belief that even when the world (and the referee) is against you, you can rise above adversity. Nobody cuts the Americans much slack, but they certainly had my sympathy vote in the penalty shootout.

Onwards they march to familiar territory. In five previous appearances, the Americans have always reached the semifinals. Twice they've gone on to win the Women's World Cup and have finished third on the other three occasions.

France, their opponent, is entering unchartered waters. The French have been a revelation in Germany and are perhaps the most improved team in the women's game. They have successfully transferred the victorious Lyon club mentality on to the global stage.

What they lack is experience. No French team has ever reached the knock out stages of the Women's World Cup, never mind the semifinals. They deservedly beat England but attempting to halt the juggernaut of the U.S. is a whole different ball game.

France, though, may benefit from two things. First, and inexplicably in my opinion, the French have had an extra 24 hours to rest and recover. Both teams were forced into extra time and the stress of a shoot out, but France will have fresher legs in Moenchengladbach.

Second, of course, is that the pressure is off. Anything from now on is a bonus for Bruno Bini's team. Despite clear improvements in the French game, they will still start as underdogs against the world's top ranked team. On the flip side, the U.S. has to deliver.

The other semifinal is too close to call. With the Germans gone, Sweden and Japan will both believe this is their moment in the sun. The Swedes are getting better with every game while the Japanese proved impossible is nothing by knocking out the hosts.

The Swedes have already beaten the U.S. and would love another crack at the Americans in the final. Lotta Schelin showed why she is rated so highly in the quarter finals. The Australians were no match Sweden in general and Schelin in particular.

Japan is living proof that physical height and power isn't the only way to win. The industry and discipline of the Nadeshiko is a perfect example of how a collective mindset can be successful. Having come this far, the Japanese will mix skill with a work ethic few can match.

With four teams left standing, all bets are off. History favours the U.S. but this is a Women's World Cup which has proved every game is winnable and every team beatable. From here on in, expect drama, tension and, perhaps, the unexpected
Much like the group stage, the quarter-final round of the FIFA Women's World Cup was not short on drama, offering plenty of highs and lows.

USA, USA, USA!

Wow!

What else is there to say about the United States' amazing, come-from-behind, penalty shootout victory over Brazil in Dresden?

In one of the greatest games in tournament history, the Americans overcame several obstacles - being reduced to 10 players, a referee incorrectly ruling a penalty shot to be retaken after Hope Solo made a smart save, and an extra-time goal by Brazil that appeared to be offside - to book their spot in the semifinals.

Abby Wambach's equalizer off a header in the final minute of extra time and Solo's save on Brazil's Daiane were the decisive moments in a game that produced plenty of entertainment and memorable moments.

The manner of the victory also showed that the U.S. has a knack for facing adversity.

"The one thing you have to respect about the U.S. is their heart. They never give up," CBC Sports commentator Jason de Vos said after the match.

Canadian soccer teams have long used blown calls by the refs as one of the major clothespins upon which to hang their shortcomings and failures in international competition.

That is not the American way. Teams from the United States, both on the men's and women's side, simply get on with it, and don't use poor officiating an excuse, but instead as an opportunity to show their resolve.

Sublime Swedes

The majority of pundits labelled Germany or Brazil as the pre-tournament favourite, buy maybe they should have focused their attention on Sweden.

The Swedes put on a master-class performance in passing, technical skill and retaining possession in a convincing 3-1 win over Australia in Augsburg.

In doing so, Sweden reached the semifinals for the first time since 2003, and in the process reaffirmed its status as one of the elite powers in the women's game.

Their rise to the top is even more special considering their fall from grace four years ago when they were unceremoniously dumped out of the World Cup in the first round.

Midfielder Lisa Dahlkvist has emerged from the shadow of star forward Lotta Schelin as the Swedes' best player, scoring in each of her country's last three matches, including a key goal in Sweden's 2-1 win over the United States in the group stage.

Japan sends Germany packing

Who saw this coming?

Germany's 15-game unbeaten run (14 wins and one draw) came to an end with a 1-0 loss in extra time to Japan in Wolfsburg. Germany had not lost a World Cup game since suffering a quarter-final defeat to the United States in 1999.

In one of the best attacking moves of the tournament, veteran midfielder Homare Sawa spotted substitute Karina Maruyama's run in the 108th minute, slipping a perfectly-weighted pass and Maruyama beat German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer at the near-post.

As the two-time defending champion and host nation, the Germans rightly entered the contest as heavy favourites.

But Japan was the better team on the day, elevating their game for the occasion and stifling the Germans with their well-organized defence, and using their skill and fitness to effectively hit out on the counter-attack.

What was especially impressive about the Japanese was their fearlessness. They were not timid nor did they show Germany overwhelming respect. They carried themselves with great self belief and used that to overcome the difference in class to upset the Germans.

Hopefully, the Canadian women's team were watching and took notes.

Fabulous French

"There's a certain magic to football," France coach Bruno Bini said after his team's penalty shootout victory over England in Leverkusen.

Indeed, there is.

Les Bleues were minutes away from World Cup elimination, down 1-0 to a dogged and determined English side, when Elise Bussaglia scored a stunning equalizer in the 88th minute.

While England backtracked and put as many players behind the ball as it could in extra time, France poured forward in search of goals, only to see their efforts thwarted. And when they missed their first attempt in the penalty shootout, it looked as though the English would escape with a victory.

But the French regained their composure and ended up winning the shootout 4-3 to advance to the semifinals for the first time in team history.

Kudos to France who played with attacking intention for the entire game, and for overcoming an England team that seemed content to adopt a defensive posture and protect its lead.

The trio of Camille Abily, Gaetane Thiney and Louisa Necib have been incredibly effective in Germany, and it would have been a shame if fans of the beautiful game would have been deprived the pleasure of seeing them wield their magic for at least for one more game.

Follow John F. If you thought interest in the World Cup would fade in Germany after the hosts bowed out of the tournament, you didn't watch the Brazil vs. USA game.

With over 25,000 people in the stands (yet another sold-out game), there was never a dull moment. The stadium was swathed in American and Brazilian flags and the clapping - slow at first - soon accelerated into a frenetic blur. I haven't heard such intense static since my 1980s ghetto blaster.

Then there was the jeering and whistling at every wasted opportunity, foul ball, dubious call, or of course - whenever Marta got near the play.

I'm not talking Americans and Brazilians - there were those too. The Americans flanked the midfield of the stands in a sea of red, white and blue, chanting: "USA, USA, USA." The Brazilians took an upper corner of the stadium hostage with their unrelenting song: "Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole... Brazil... Brazil." The singers were, of course, accompanied by a full orchestra of tambourines and [what sounded like] foghorns. Take that, vuvuzelas.

But the majority of the fans in fancy dress -- oohing and aahing -- were straight-up Germans, fans of the women's game.

"Germany isn't good enough to be the champions this year, and I hope that this team will be the next world champion," said Steffen Schelk, waving an American flag.

"We are sports fans - not only German sports fans," added Schelk. "We like watching good sport and the women's game is getting better and better."

"Maybe today [Germans will be less supportive of the Cup] because they are still upset, but I think that by the semi-finals and the finals, Germans will pick a team and support it," said Alex Dost, who was sporting an Erika (Brazil) jersey.

The Dresden crowd's support flip-flopped several times during the match. At first the whistles and jeers were directed at the USA goalie Hope Solo, for wasting time during her long jaunts up the field. But soon after Marta became the target, after she complained to the referee, and then scored on a penalty re-take.

Marta's been booed in every game I've attended. But this one took the cake. The booing was deafening. I tip my metaphorical hat to Marta, who kept her cool under those circumstances, and went on to score two goals - the first penalty and a beautiful hook shot to put Brazil into the lead during overtime. She's been voted the best player in the world five years running for a reason.

"I don't really understand why Marta gets so much whistling, because it started the first day," her coach Kleiton Lima said after the game. "She's one of the best players in the world, and she performed again today: she supported her team and scored two goals."

Solo, the USA's goalie, said the crowd's support helped her side stay motivated until the final minutes of the game, when they tied the score. But the energy works both ways - the American's team spirit also helped win over the stands.

"I felt a lot of support from the crowd personally," she said after the game. "When you see players giving everything they have ... that energy can shift to the crowd."

Pia Sundhage, the USA Coach, gave credit to the crowd for keeping the players on both teams in check: "They know football, this crowd," she said after the game. "Because when [Solo] kept it too long, and it was slow and boring, they started to yell."

The Americans definitely won a few fans with their team spirit and remarkable final goal, but local support may change in the next round of playoffs.

"There are a lot of Swedish people in Germany and last year Sweden had a lot of support at the juniors," he said.

"I think Sweden will win the Cup," says Jorg Alt, a German fan. "They are an impressive team."

What we were becoming convinced of at this Women's World
Cup we are absolutely sure of now.
The women's game has been turned on its head. No longer are the top two or
three ranked teams a lock to make it to the World Cup final. This is anyone's
game now.

Germany's dismantling by Japan is the final piece of evidence required to say
with absolute confidence that what we once knew about the women's game no
longer applies. Just about anyone can win at anytime. The gap has narrowed, and
it's a brand new ball game.

There was something about Germany that didn't seem right
heading into this one, though. Birgit Prinz was not "mentally ready"
to play? She is obviously on the downside of her career and perhaps she's even
played her final match for her country.

It would be realistic to suggest that her state of mind
rubbed off on her teammates. We watched all the off-air televisions pictures of
the German team arriving at the stadium in Wolfsburg before the match and the players'
body language spoke volumes.

This was a team that did not look ready to play.

Japan on the other hand is making believers of us. Until now we were wondering
if the team that smashed Mexico 4-0 was the real Japan, or was it the team that
lost 2-0 in lacklustre fashion to England. It appears the former is the case
