English soccer club Everton is in talks to sign Los Angeles Galaxy striker Landon Donovan on a short-term loan.
A temporary move to the Premier League team would enable the American to retain match fitness before the World Cup starts in June. The new Major League Soccer season begins in March.
Everton chief executive Robert Elstone said Thursday that "we are working to make that happen and hope we can reach agreement soon with all the appropriate parties."
Donovan, who spent three months on loan at Bayern Munich earlier this year, would join Everton on Jan. 2 if negotiations are successful.
Donovan's Galaxy teammate, David Beckham, will also be out on loan in January for a second stint at AC Milan.
