Saying it's always darkest before the dawn, Toronto FC manager Paul Mariner is promising to put the ailing Major League Soccer franchise right.

Mariner is set to fly to Europe to begin scouting the talent needed to turn around the league's worst team.

Toronto finished a franchise-worst 5-21-8 this season, finishing out of the playoffs for a sixth straight year.

Mariner pointed to injuries to key players and a lack of quality elsewhere.

Defender Richard Eckersley cited poor fitness from the previous coaching regime and a lack of confidence among the players as the season went south.
