Dimitri Payet's wayward corner kick

As simple as corner kicks may be, they've become mighty challenging for some over the past week. The latest example occurred during Marseille’s 1-0 victory over Guingamp in the French league on Saturday.

It’s as routine a play as there is in sport.

But as simple as corner kicks may be, they’ve become mighty challenging for some over the past week.

The latest example occurred during Marseille’s 1-0 victory over Guingamp in the French league on Saturday.

Forward Dimitri Payet sent his corner kick wide right – way right – and watched it hit the scoreboard high above the end of the field behind the Guingamp net.

On Aug. 16, Nante’s French-born midfielder Serge Gakpe managed to kick the corner flag rather than the ball in his club’s 1-1 draw with Metz.

Since the 27-year-old failed to make contact with the ball and nearly fell over, he was allowed a second chance.

And a week ago, AC Milan midfielder Keisuke Honda was a little off line with his corner kick in a 2-1 loss to Valencia in the final pre-season match in La Liga play.
