The Canadian women's soccer team is aiming for one of two Olympic berths as the eight-team North American, Central American and Caribbean (CONCACAF) Olympic qualifying tournament gets underway Jan. 19-29 in Vancouver.
Led by new coach John Herdman, Canada opens their quest for London 2012 Thursday night at BC Place against Haiti before finishing group play against Cuba on Saturday and Costa Rica on Monday. The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals on Jan. 27. And that's key.
For Olympic qualifying, there are no second chances. Only the two teams in the final — scheduled for Jan. 29 — qualify for London.
Canada's challengers for the two coveted Olympic spots will come from the other group, featuring the powerhouse United States, runners-up at last summer's FIFA Women's World Cup, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala.
