What’s at stake
Each team here needs full points if they have any hope of moving past the group stage.
Wilson Palacios, a star player for Honduras, will miss this match. He’s serving a one-game ban for his red card against France.
Honduras: Jerry Bengston. He was neutralized by France, and came off after 46 minutes. So his “Los Catrachos” need Bengston — a strong playmaker — to rediscover his top form.
Ecuador: Antonio Valenica. Their captain had a tepid opening match. Look for him to step up in the second match.
What to watch for
Honduras went down to 10 men after 28 minutes, then gave up two goals. They need to be more disciplined against Ecuador if they want to stay in the game for the whole 90 minutes.
Ecuador’s defence was shaky at best against the Swiss. They have to be much more steady at the back.
They said it
“If the technology sends a clear message, then I don't understand how the system can say it's a goal first and then `No goal.' What is the truth?" — Honduran manager Luis Suarez expressing his bafflement at the new goal-line technology.
"We lost our organization, which has been one of our characteristics, at the end of the match. We were somewhat betrayed by our emotion." — Reinaldo Rueda speaking to reporters about his team’s last-minute loss to Switzerland.
The Big Number
8 - These two teams have drawn eight of their 13 previous head-to-head matches. Both teams need more than a draw in this match to survive in Brazil.
Obligatory fun fact
The maiden usage of FIFA’s new goal-line technology came in the Honduras-France game. It proved the ball went in. And Hondurans complained.
