There was of course one major talking point that came out of the U.S.-Portugal clash. Naturally, it was Cristiano Ronaldo’s new haircut.

The zigzag buzz through Ronaldo’s hair, or “ziggy,” as it’s not known anywhere, was the talk of the match, derided by most of the world’s population.

But would it change your mind if you knew that his new haircut was in tribute to a child fighting cancer?

An article is circulating on Twitter about Ronaldo paying for cancer surgery for a child named Erik. All of the tweets say that Ronaldo cut his hair in the shape of the scar the child had to remove a tumour.

It’s yet another heartwarming tale about a superstar athlete changing the life of a young child, and the story has blown up all over the internet.

It also might not be true.

After the story broke, Deadspin pointed out several facts that would take internet people a little under five minutes to find on their own:

  • The original article about Ronaldo helping the child is from March
  • No actual news reports have surfaced which say that Ronaldo did this for the child

The one thing Ronaldo did do, without a doubt, is use over $80,000 of his own money to pay for the child’s surgery. So there’s that. But everything else is pure speculation.

So the answer is that we’re back where we started, nobody knows anything, and the internet will get a boatload of comments and shameless page views on absolutely nothing. On an unrelated note, please share this article and comment below.
