Great goals, stunning saves and remarkable upsets: the FIFA Confederations Cup provided plenty of talking points for fans of the beautiful game.
Here are just some of the highlights:
Best player: All of the talk going into this tournament was focused on two players: Kaka and Fernando Torres. While both put in strong performances, Brazilian forward Luis Fabiano eclipsed them both, scoring a tournament-leading five goals, including a pair in Brazil's 3-2 win over the U.S. in the final.
Best game: Brazil's 4-3 victory over Egypt had everything: plenty of goals, great saves, drama and an unbelievable finish that saw Kaka score from the penalty spot in injury time to rescue the Brazilians. Honourable mention goes to Brazil's amazing come-from-behind win over the U.S. in the final.
Best goal: Giuseppe Rossi was one of the few bright spots for Italy, and his first goal in the Azzurri's 3-1 win over the U.S. was the best of the competition. After winning the ball in midfield, Rossi went on a smart run and unleashed a cannon of a shot from 30 yards out that beat American goalkeeper Tim Howard just inside the post. Honourable mentions go out to Dani Alves' free kick goal for Brazil in the semifinals, and Katlego Mphela's second goal for South Africa in the bronze medal game.
Best individual performance: Step forward Fernando Torres. El Nino showed why is one of the best strikers in the world, scoring three goals in 11 minutes in Spain's 5-0 win over New Zealand in the first round.
Best save: With the score tied 0-0 in the second half of the Brazil-South Africa semifinal, Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar made a spectacular save to keep his country in the game — Teko Modise's shot deflected off a defender, crossing up Cesar who did well do dive back and get a hand on the ball.
Biggest upset: Who thought the United States had any chance of defeating Spain, the best team in the world, and ending their 35-game unbeaten run — a streak that dates back to November 2006? But full credit must be given to the Americans who earned a 2-0 win over the European champions in the semifinals. Honourable mention to Egypt's 1-0 win over Italy, the first time the Italians lost to African opposition.
Biggest surprise: World champions Italy being totally out-classed in a 3-0 loss to Brazil and disgracefully bowing out of the tournament in the first round.
Best scene: To watch the New Zealand national team joyously celebrate and carry on as though they won after battling Iraq to a scoreless draw in the first round was something to see. New Zealand failed to score a goal in three matches in South Africa and finished dead last in Group A. But that didn't stop the Kiwis, who failed to win a single game in their two previous tournament appearances (1999 and 2003) from celebrating in style after earning the first ever point in nine contests at the Confederations Cup.
