Italy's Karbon captures Panorama giant slalom
Italy's Denise Karbon won a women's World Cup giant slalom Saturday in Panorama, B.C., for her second consecutive victory in the discipline.
Karbon, who finished 15th in last year's giant slalom standings, posted a two-run combined time of two minutes, 42.71 seconds Saturday.
Austria's Elisabeth Gorgl finished second in 2:43.13, while Italy's Manuela Moelgg was third in 2:43.22.
Defending World Cup giant slalom and overall champion Nicole Hosp of Austria finished 16th in 2:45.03.
Montreal's Emilie Desforges, Emily Brydon of Fernie, B.C., Britt Janyk of Whistler, B.C., and Marie-Pier Prefontaine of St. Sauveur, Que., failed to qualify for the second run.
"I am mad at myself," Brydon said. "I should have qualified for the second run and I didn’t do that. It is an opportunity to race at home in front of this amazing crowd and we did not take advantage of that today."
Gail Kelly of Ste-Anges de Beauce, Que., and Christina Lustenberger of Invermere, B.C., did not complete the first leg.
Competition in Panorama continues Sunday withthe women's slalom.
